One million cockroaches flee China farm
Quote:
Dafeng, Jiangsu (Aug 25): At least one million cockroaches have escaped a farm in China where they were being bred for use in traditional medicine, a report said.

The cockroaches fled the facility in Dafeng, in the eastern province of Jiangsu, for surrounding cornfields earlier this month after an "unknown perpetrator" destroyed the plastic greenhouse where they were raised, the Modern Express newspaper said.

Farm owner Wang Pengsheng invested more than 100,000 yuan (US$16,000) in 102kg of Periplaneta americana eggs after spending six months developing a business plan, the report Friday said.

The cockroach is generally considered a pest, but believers in traditional Chinese medicine — which uses both plants and animals, including endangered species — say extracts from it can treat diseases including cancer, reduce inflammation and improve immunity.

By the time the greenhouse was damaged, more than 1.5 million cockroaches had hatched and were being fed food including "fruits and biscuits" every day, Wang was quoted as saying.

He had expected to make around 1,000 yuan profit for every kilogram of cockroaches sold, according to the report, but was now facing losses of hundreds of thousands of yuan.

It already sounds like a summer blockbuster in the making.

Supposedly it is done by the landgrabbers, if rumours are to be believed.

If that is so, karma is a real bitch.

Any news of the damage done by those escapees?

Late to the party of the fetish thing, but I'm disappointed that miko uniform did not rank.

Oddly, I'm not that big a school uniform fan outside of the cosplay context. Unless it involves thighighs. Those are hot.

Japan police 'solve riddle of missing bike saddles'

Quote:
Japanese police have got to the bottom of a mysterious crime wave that saw 200 leather bicycle saddles vanish in a matter of months, reports say.

Joji Kondo, 35, confessed to police that he would steal the saddles and then sniff and lick them when he got home, the Sports Hochi reported on Sunday.

He told officers that he liked the texture and smell of leather and that he particularly "likes saddles sat on by women", the newspaper said.

Police in Yokohama, near Tokyo, had been receiving regular reports since January that bicycle seats were going missing, the paper and other media said.

Kondo told police that he knew by the aroma whether the bike he was targeting belonged to a man or a woman, the paper said.

The Kanagawa prefectural police declined to confirm the reports.
Err... wut

It's like a whackier, less sad version of the old 'Batteries Not Included' movie, if I remember right. Since they both involved saving a rundown apartment block... right?

Paper-pusher adds to India's crazy bureaucracy
Quote:
Delhi (Aug 28, Wed): Indian bureaucracy is famously the worst in Asia, and one of the worst in the world.

But an incident involving Bhaskar Rao, the Inspector General of Police for Internal Security, is a truly epic case of bureaucratic waste.

The Deccan Chronicle reports that in addition to being the Inspector General of Police for Internal Security on Aug 1, the government a;sp made him the Inspector General in charge of training.

Since then, Rao has been writing letters to himself. From the Deccan Chronicle:
"As the Inspector General of Police, Internal Security Division, Bhaskar Rao has to write to IGP, Training, Bhaskar Rao, that his men from the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force need to be sent for training for which the date should be fixed at the earliest.

"He then goes back to the office of IGP, Training, in Carlton House and replies to the letter that he had sent to himself the day before from his office as IGP, ISD, on Richmond Road with the training schedule for the KSISF.

"In a letter addressed to IGP, ISD, Bhaskar Rao states that in response to 'your letter seeking dates for training of your men we are sending you the following schedule as under. This cannot be changed…' s/d IGP, Training, Bhaskar Rao."
A shortage of Indian Police Service (IPS) has meant the top tier often get handed extra responsibilities and titles.

"I have to do my work and there has to be consistency in correspondence," Rao told the Deccan Chronicle. "There are times when I have to dictate a stern letter to myself because of the delay in response from myself from the other office."

Rao says he will continue to correspond with himself until someone else is appointed to the position of IGP Training.

Aussie Spec Ops Had A Hand In Mutilating Insurgents

Reminds me of a case where British Gurkhas took a head back for ID because they weren't given sampling equipment.
