Then of course it look shit.. Going under 80% if you really wanted to be stingy on the filesize.. Also, if you really wanted to see how quality is, the easiest way is using gradient. Then you can really easily (even newbie can tell) how quality differs between format.

You still cheated on jpeg. A image with a lot of red (not so common) will always look shit in jpeg.
The algorithms are crap when it comes to red tones.

Hmm... I though that the maximum quality to have it AS Safe was 80%-85%

JPG 90% and PNG-8 versions look very similar, the only fiference I can sence is in the text

@Cats: I'm not cheating Just wanted to make a comparation so we can get out of doubts

Nah .. the quality defers, you not necessarily have to set it to 80% outset .. I usually set it max at 99% then drop it down until its within limit I want. That being said, I always wonder why do 100% and 99% usually have a big difference in filesize?

The trick to optimization is very simple - maximum quality with minimal file size. My goal when choosing quality essentially comes down to "how small can I make this file before it compromises the original image quality?" Once I establish that, then I slowly increase the quality until I'm comfortable that I've gotten the best image quality possible while staying within preordained size limits.

In the case of your signature, I used your large source (the PNG), and I was able to nearly max out the quality slider in JPEG without going over the forum size limit. Since the two signatures are nearly indistinguishable at that point the reduction was acceptable to me.

It takes some playing with, but eventually you work out a good system of figuring out how to get the most benefit with the boundaries you're given.

What drives me nuts is that some graphic artists think that bigger file size = higher quality. This isn't always true. In fact, some files could be cut in half as far as bit size is concerned and the quality drop would be unnoticeable, if any drop actually occurred at all.

Which is why I believe that AS 50Kb limit is a good practice zone since unoptimised 500x160 usually falls between 60-80kb jpg version but will get within limit with optimisation.

wow, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to start a discussion over here...

but thanks guys

I actually thought that 100% quality was the best... *ashamed*

never realised that I could have like 90% and reduce the file size and still have the same quality... so now, my siggys here won't look crappy anymore *I hope *

so thank you all

edit: so now, what do you say of my siggy?

Wrong. You can lower it to 90% and it will still look 100% on a un-tuned monitor.
w/e I guess the statement "still have the same quality" is true 99% of the time.

Spoiler for Easier to notice difference:

This is a semi-dumb question but I want to ask it before I write an icon tutorial for a friend. I made an icon where I desaturated the entire icon cept for the eyes, now to do this I used the slice tool around the eye, inversed it and desaturated the image (using layers not the total desat). For the other eye I reversed the proccess, sliced around the eye and did a saturation again using a layer. My ques is there a better way to do this? Is there a tool where you can slice two objects at once?

@.@ Nanikore?

So you want a black and white picture but with the eyes stay colored? Duplicate the face layer. Desaturate the bottom layer, put a layer mask on the top layer, fill mask with black .. Now take your brush tool and gently brush the eyes with white (make sure your layer mask is still selected.)

» add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer
» saturation: 0
» hit X and just brush at the eyes

Adjustment layers have a layer mask by default. You can fine tune the de-saturation by playing with the lightness value while you're in the dialog.

Some good tuts in there, I learned a few things I didn't know before that'll be quite useful in the future, so I'd like to thank everyone who put their time into making the tuts for this forum.

Now on to my question. Does anyone use Ulead gif animator 5? I'd like to know exactly how to change the wid/hgt of all of the actual images themselves at once, opposed to having to do each one individually, which is a pain in the ass even after i delete some frames.
