Smoothing is pretty much a more confusing term for gaussian blur. Making JPEG sigs AS-safe isn't really a huge issue. Lowest I've ever had to go was about 70 in quality and at that level the difference between the original and compressed is fairly minimal. So I'd leave the smoothing alone. I may work on photos but with graphics it just makes them too soft.

thanks, maybe it's just the coloring
maybe it's because I use way too many gradient maps

Yeah, you could combine this with my previous "Flames tutorial" to get a more relistic efect.

Also, changing the colors you could create planets, moons or even balls of magical energy.

I know the monochrome with a twist theme is done but

hmm well there's an easy way to do it:

-you just duplicate the layer.
-then you desaturate all you want and you erase the eyes or the part you want to be different (all this on the top layer) and apply the effects you want on the bottom layer and voila (:

so you don't make that layer as "color" or "overlay"
just the normal adjustments with 100% opacity?

hmm yeah I usually go with the normal adjustments and 100% opacity unless it needs some minor adjustments to link better you know?

other than that it's just as I said... there are more ways to do it... I think it envolves masking with which I'm not too familiar with so I just use this method - it's simple and it works as well ^^

yeah it works for coloring the part you want but I want to learn the glowing like effect ass well (i.e your making a monochrome "Terminator" sig, their eyes are light so they make this glowing effect...)

well it's alright if you don't know, I'm gonna test out many stuff particular to this technique

well I don't know about eyes and the exact glowing you want but usually by duplicating the layer and putting it as overlay or soft light does the trick...

Ok, it was a long time ago when I wanted to post a tutorial here. It was a sig tutorial at first, but these are everywhere, so after a massive amount of reiterations, I took it from a different angle and offer you a bit of a guide. This guide won't help the pro's too much (or at all), it's actually targeted at the beginner-intermediate part of community, those that have yet to experience the full power of Adobe Photoshop.

Spoiler for size:

Well, I hope it's worth posting here. You never know what people don't know.

Oh and I do hope it's readable and easily understood. If not, go ahead and do tell me.
