I'm kinda getting the sense she doesn't really do anything, just sits and prays, and gets refered to as something special/odd by flame hazes/bal masque members/etc. maybe she'll be more active as of 16, seeing as how Bal Masque is finally moving towards a singular goal.

I haven't actually started watching S2 yet, but I know of what's happening so I've got to ask - is this current deal with Hecate have a root in actual novel events, or is it just "fan service" filler for the Hecate fans...?

It seems that it never happened in the novel, just like Mea. There was also no stupid flame denizen.

Whether this is for Hecate fans or not... I don't know. It could be for Shana and Kazumi, considering their reaction to Fumina's Yuuji grabbing.

Is there anyone that has read the novels that could give some sort of a summary of what happened between volumes 3-14? Like what really happened in the part where you see Yuji going berserk with blutsauger and stuff that happened after the perverted twins arc. Thanks

Ugh, that is fail.

I like Hecate and all, but I want more Shana novel in animated form goodness. Having this season end with Snake of the Festival Sakai Yuuji would be really lame. =/

A question for novel folk. Well, more like a, "what are your theories" question.

I tend to subscribe to the basic rule that originals are better than adaptations, so I would say the novels.

Yeah Originals are usually better than adaptations though there are a few exceptions....

The novels are better because they go indepth about what's going on, and also the manga really didn't get that far, the story developed like more than 5 times as much in the novels, and the art from the manga looked kinda wierd.

I disagree. It's usually a function of what one sees first.

1. Play Fate/stay night visual novel.
2. Watch Fate/stay night anime.
3. ???
4. Disgust.

Applying the reverse (invert 1 + 2), "the novel is cool, but it isn't THAT great".

First impressions are lasting.

Hah, I watched the nonexistant animu first, then played the novels. I like the novels' other endings better than the mostly-Fate ending the anime went with, but to be honest, the best thing to come out of the franchise is the doujin which explore all the story's options to the fullest, if you know what I mean. Especially Type Moon Complex's tsuntsun-deredere Rin.

Anyhow, back to our regular programming...

Anybody got the second novel in japanese AND english? I got the English version, and I want to know if there were any differences aside from the kill/killing intent.

Nearly impossible. Shana, being the protagonist, has experienced too much sadness up to this point. Ending it on a sad note would end up in suicide.

By suicide, do you mean it would anger the fans or...? Care to elaborate?

They should be good enough to read and understand. There are indeed parts where the translation could have been better, but it isn't terrible.

One thing that bugged me about their translation was:

Sairei no Hebi

It basically seems to translate to Snake of the Festival, but the translator makes it:

Snake Festival

...

Yes...

We don't get a festive snake, we get a festival of snakes...

Calling a snake 'of the ceremony/ritual' is to say it is a spiritual/mystical snake, in much the same way you would call a monk or hermit 'holy' or 'spiritual.'

But of course, just as priests and holiness are ideas appreciable to western and christian sensibility, "ceremony" is a peculiar japanese phenomenon. This is why a literal translation would not appeal to western readers. A translation that best preserves meaning across culture might be, 'Mystic Snake' or "Shaman Serpent." A more colorful, fair or not, interpretation could be 'Dark/Sinister+Magical/Occult Serpent'
