Three bucks?

No, the average comic these days is two twenty-five. And the gimmicks are gone, save for Indy companies like Aspen and Top Cow having four-plus covers per book. They only do different covers for reprints, like the five times Teen Titans #1 was reprinted in the past three months.

Also, kick ass name, man!

Sadly, Savage Dragon costs $3 an issue, but yeah, everything else is about 2.25 for me.

Anyway, I went to see "The Last Samurai" last night and one of the trailers before the movie was for Hellboy. Since I try and see comic movies when they come out, I'll probably go see it, but I'm not so sure about it...I must admit Hellboy did look rather silly to me in the preview. I've never been a reader but from just seeing images of Mike Mignola's art around he looked pretty cool to me (in comparison)...however, time will only tell how bad this movie will be.

I guess I need to look at the prices for more series, I collected the DW Transformers comics and the cover price is $2.95 plus 8% sales tax which puts it over $3. I remember when I would get money from my parents for good grades I would have like $20 and would go buy a stack of 20 comics. Now even at $2.25 I'd be lucky to get 8. But once I finish up school and start working full time, maybe I'll have some extra money to burn on comics. I wouldn't mind getting some of those trade paperback titles of old series that I never was able to complete.

What do you guys think of the Marvel Ultimate series? Iv'e read the first 40 some issues of Spider-Man and the first 6 or seven of X-Men, and I kind of like them. I still prefer the originals but anything that brings Collossus back to the X-Men is cool with me! (He's still dead right? With Marvel you never know....)

Edit: Hey Vulkar, I've heard that Savage Dragon is a really cool series, did you ever watch the cartoon? I always wondered if the cartoon was cool, and if it would be worth tracking down.

Dream Wave, Top Cow, Image, and other Indy books usually cost more because they're smaller and in greater need of money than, say, Marvel or DC. Which is why you'll see the occasional "Quarter Book" promo from both companies to attract new readers, but you'll never see an Indy book for twenty-five cents.

And I have every issue of every Ultimate series except Ultimate Six, but I'll be getting that in a trade. And I haven't been too disappointed so far. Bendis does a flawless Spider-man, and Millar's early X-Men was good, though it waned a bit towards the end. But now that Bendis is on that, too, it's gold. The only sad book is The Ultimates, because a lot of times, Hitch's art looks rushed, and some of the crap Millar writes in that book is just tripe. "Hulk want Freddy Prinze Jr."? Not fuckin' likely!

Yeah, Savage Dragon is $2.95 cuz the author really needs the money. My home is in NH though so I have no sales tax.

I was reading "The Ultimates" for a bit and I liked it but I think the releases really slowed down in releases and I stopped buying it. I don't know what's happening now. I was up to around 8 or 9 I think. It had Hawkeye on the cover, I believe. Anyway, I have to disagree with Jack Zodiac on this one. When the Hulk wants to kill Freddy Prinze Jr. I thought that was very funny...and I especially liked how Captain American kicked Bruce Banner in the face afterwards. And the scene with Cap, Thor, and Iron Man having dinner together at Stark's apartment I thought was very well done.

Actually, the cartoon was how I first started reading it. I was a big fan of the toon when I first saw it. However, if you just read the letters page you'll learn that all the Dragon fans and the comics creator despise it. Only reason I can guess is that it was too toned down from the comic. No big time sex and violence. Anyway, that never really bothered me cuz I don't really read the book for the decapitations and giant breasts. I like the bizarre characters Larsen is able to create. Anyway, the book is pretty decent. If you were to start I'd recommend you start at #1 cuz that's when it was best and the back issues are relatively cheap. Around cover price for me. Once the book gets up to about issue 75ish...he takes sharp left turn and changes the entire universe around...at first it was pretty bleh, but then it got pretty ok...now, it's bleh again. The book is kind of coasting right now in rather dull, supposedly witty one shot stories.

A little note, the writer, Erik Larsen, has penciled, inked, and written over 100 issues straight! That's quite a milestone.

I really glad that they are redoing the Punisher comics, I hated the white gloved and booted avenger's old look. The regular clothes are so much better. Now, he looks more real.

But the movie is going to suck, but the old one with Dulph is the best.

But Deathpool is the best comic ever, he is so funny.

O.K here's a question for everyone. What has been the best comic based cartoon so far?

My vote would have to go to either X-Men Evolution (especially the end of the 2nd season and after) or the Batman cartoon that was on WB I believe, including the theatrical movie. But I know there have been many that I never got a chance to watch, such as the short lived Wildcats that was canceled before I even knew it was a show . I'm not sure it would really be considered a comic series since I think the show came before the comic but The Tick was awsome too.

The first X-man show, that was the coolest, but it still sucks. Same with the new X-man show but it sucks even more.

You know that Punisher has a comic book about his days in Vietnam, it is so cool. It is called "Born."

Punisher is so cool, I think Death Pool and Punisher and Wolverine should go around and kill all the other comic book people and then spend all there time fighting "Alien" and "Predator" and "Batman" and "SuperMan" and pussboy "Aquaman." then Death Pool and Punisher and Wolverine go a get laid all the time and some time "Cable" shows up from the future. That would be cool.

Speaking of those Aliens, Predator and Batman has anyone seen that independant Batman short film "Dead End" where they fight? I swear that was cooler than any big screen batman movie released to date! Batman Dead End

I used to collect comics, mainly cuz when i was 7 i thought that someday when im like 50 i could sell them all for thousands of dollars and retire early. i did the same thing for baseball cards. as i got older, i found out that really the only people who make any money are the companies who make the collectables.

It sucks too, cuz i only read each comic i had once or twice and put them back in thier acid-free polyethylene bags with cardboard backing to ensure that they were in mint condition.

Now i dont care about keeping them in pristine condition and basically read them and blow my nose in em and maybe toilet paper if I was out. well, i used too cuz i stoped reading em a few years back.

well, thats all for today, i promise to update this blog later!

Jack.. I got out of the comic book scene.. but could you tell me what the hell happaned to spiderman?

I used to be a big fan of it.. I have tons of it. Even some really olds ones of my uncles when he was a kid.

About a month ago I go into our comic book store to pick up something for a freind. I flip through the spidermen comics on the shelf.. and I had no clue what was happening. I didn't really like the style, and as it seems they brought up a whole 'nother story line.

Last one I read was concluding the Spiderman/Green Goblin stuff. It was a big specail edition one.

I know excatly what you mean! I felt so certain that SuperPro (a superhero who wears red white and blue football uniform and has a special football he fights with ) was gonna be the next big thing (since Marvel said he was) that I not only bought SuperPro issue #1, but I also went halfs with a friend of mine and bought a SuperPro special edition insert card that came with NFL Pro Set football cards for like $10. It's worth nothing.

I also have all kinds of #1 comics like Shadow Hawk, Moon Knight, Dark Hawk, Wonder Man ect. ect. Man do I feel stupid when I look at them. Thankfully it was'nt all a waste of time, I still have a few comics that are valued in the $20 to $30 range, like the first appearance of Venom that I could get graded and would probably double their value, but I'm guessing me, my bro and a few of our friends spent about $600 on comics in the early ninties and they are probably worth a combined $200 if we were VERY VERY lucky.

Thankfully they are still fun to read every so often.

I got the first appearance of the symbonite coustue for like 25 cents in ok~good condition. I also picked up some mint 1964 or 63 batman cards for like 5 cents each. It all depends on what comic book store you go to. If i went to the franchised ones, i would expect to spend retail, but for the independent ones they had a lot of cool free stuff they gave away, and unquie items.

dam, thinking about old times makes me want to collect and read comics again.

I lucked out, my bro got our best comics (venom, the Hulk cover from McFarlene with woverines claws showing grey Hulks reflection, and a few others) when he was at his friends house, some neighborhood kid decided comics where gay and only for kids so he was selling his collection for cover price, and that was in the early ninties so those comics were already worth in the $20 range I believe.

I don't think we have any cool comic shops like you have, they're independant but still suck

Damn, nobody wants to talk comics anymore. Well I just returned a movie to the video store at the bottom of my hill and I was looking through the used DVD section where all DVD are marked $9.95 and picked up X-Men 2 and Hulk. Im not sure if I wasted my money on Hulk since I saw it only once on opening night but after drinking a 40oz of beer and 4 shots of bacardi and all I really remember is that it seemed to drag forever and a giant green poodle (but everyone says it was cool just long) but I know X-men 2 was the single best comic based movie ever so I'm pretty happy about that.
