Giant Robots May Be Just Around the Corner

According to these webpages, a robotic exoskeleton is in development which will be capable of allowing the wearer to carry 200lbs in addition to the weight of the machine, and will allow the user to travel at more than 6 feet per second. Certianly sounds like some anime series may become reality if this is developed some more.

That isn't really what I'd call a giant robot. It's more like power armor you'd find in some sci fi novels, just there to allow the soldier to carry more weight which usually translates into heavier armor and weapons.

Giant robots tend to be well, giant.

Note that this would have many civilian applications as well, including assisting paralyzed people in walking.

what? you expect them to make a mobile suit in the first try? this is only a prototype and the first successful one at that. But this is also the closest anyone's ever come to an agile robotic fighting mechanism, and agility is the key feature distinguishing stereotypical western and eastern giant robots. (Eastern robots resemble a samurai, and typically look more like people, wheras western robots resemble tanks with legs) Personally, I can't think of how development on any kind of giant robot woulld begin without forerunners like this.

My train of thought goes:

Small Robo-armor--------------->Big Robo Armor(a la the matrix)------------------->Giant Robot

That's odd...I've read that news several years ago. Maybe because I keep tabs on the U.S. military....

I never put too much thought into it though. I have a feeling it's because in the end, a human is using it, and I'm not the kind of person who would like to artificially carry more weight

But it's a nice concept, although nothing compared to the other things the U.S. is trying. They've yet the perfect the Armor packs for soldiers....

I guess this is a start in developing huge robots (: but what would we do with huge robots... besides use them in wars (Or maybe use them for weird stuff like sending them into space ^^)

There is a Japanese robot suit, from IREX.

At first site, we thought we were looking at one badazz crime-fighting cyborg prepping to blast that human wall target
Ahaha! That what I thought first.

So far those look like powersuits (is there a skin tight model ) for persons to carry more weight or like Kamui4356 said, for disabled people.
Maybe if they are considered practical, they will evolve something that resebles a mech, not likely in a next 10 years.
