Yeah, I thought her dad handed it to her right before he went off to the 4th war. Either way, she wasn't the one to put mana into it. She put them into the other 9 or so jewels that she had.

I thought that too, until I re-read the VN when writing a story set in the fourth war where this was relevant. Her father left it to her in his will, which she only decodes the night before the war. It's her "trump card".

In Fate/Zero Tokiomi clearly doesn't give Rin anything when they last meet. He gives Kirei his will, which I guess also had a code for Rin to find the jewel. There's not any background info on it as far as I know.

FSN makes it pretty clear, I think. She says that she found it when she decoded the will, which she only did the night before the summoning.

One last question (for now, anyway)!

Was reading the typemoon wiki, and saw something interesting it said about the Grail War. Even though it's not really any form of spoilers, I'll spoiler box it just in case:
Spoiler:

What does it mean for the first two wars (specifically, the flaws in the rules)? How did the wars end in the first through third Wars? In fact, since there wasn't a catastrophe in the third war, so it's not like it was destroyed or anything. I know the fourth and fifth were the closest to being complete, but how would the war end the other times without having anything completed?

My guess is that everyone killed each other and it ended in a stalemate because it was completely unorganised and everyone just went all out on each other in a massive clusterfuck, that ended very very badly.

Well, I believe that the first war only had three servants (the Einsbern, Makiri and Tohsaka families), and thus the Grail wasn't fully formed. The second war is never described in canon, so the outcome of it is unknown, but it is likely that, because it was their first time of inviting outsiders in, they made a mess of it and the whole thing went tits up, likely leading to substantial collateral damage.

What kind of a BS loophole is that?

Welcome to the Nasuverse, where everything mostly makes sense, but sometimes doesn't.

Yes...Nasu has a way with loopholes...you don't pick up on them until after the fact.

Not sure what you mean about Gilgamesh.

As for Saber, it's hard to say. It did establish that she was unique in that regard. At the very least, she'd only remain Saber Alter in that reality (since, despite the whole "hero from any plane" aspect, it's clearly always the Saber from that reality). There aren't any more Heaven's Feels after the 5th, and I don't believe any other grails use the Servant system, so she wouldn't be summoned again anyway.

Sucks for her.

I'm imagining a Saber Alter in Avalon. Merlin would not be pleased...

All his talk about a copy always being weaker than the original and him calling Archer and Shirou 'fakers' just because they projected copies of the original...

Why does Shirou turn into swords? I always thought it was because of his origin, but recently someone has mentioned that it was a passive effect of UBW, kind of like Chaos's reality marble.
