(You know, I seriously was thinking if this is an alternate Haruhi when the rock band's warming up... and yes, the thought of Tsukimiya Ayu Manabi, and Mei Haruhi lingers on in this episode. Is this...SOS Dan?)

This is a nice pace for a change in anime type. Very moe and nice story. Now I'm wondering when Momo will be inducted into the council. She is there most of the time and is quite active in the council.

Ahem.... I choose to be as gracious as possible about this and say I'm kind of sad I was right about some things regarding where this show was headed
Spoiler:
Sounds rather disappointing and like they wasted a lot of opportunity from what you describe. As critical as I am about this show I never like to see any of its fans disappointed with it, because that's far worse than anything it could ever do to me.

Did they ever do the PV's by the way?

The PVs appear to be simply evil jests ... unless the last episode is going to be the shocking snuff ep of the year desu...

yeah... the song/festival was enjoyable ... but it did leave the serious impression of a Coca-cola placement ad rather than the joyous climax of a hard fought for festival. For some reason the SHnY festival didn't leave that aftertaste (possibly because it is reflected from the novel?).

I'll have to wait for the subs because I really didn't take the time to figure out what was being said though...

At least what I've seen throughout the series eps fansubbed so far has been an infectious level of energy and excitement (loved the Mikan + Mu-chi ep in particular)

I'm a little behind, watching ep 5, and noticed something. It seems like in the beginning of the ep the teacher is having Mei read porn to the class. Am I mistaken here? From what I can understand of what she says I got this:
"The spear is very (something) and hard. And it is large and long. There is surprize of it. (something or someone) regrets it, and she pressing it against him. But she have never thought..."

I'm going to really, really like this series, for all the reasons the able posters have mentioned before: High quality art and animation, great music, and so forth; since I've only seen two episodes, I'm not sure if it'll have the same level of character development as Kamichu did, but I'll enjoy it nontheless.

Perhaps somebody has posted about this already (I think not), but in episode, this shocked the heck out of me:

Spoiler for WTF CONSPIRACY?!?!?:

It isn't *directly* porn.. but definitely "double-entendre" porn. Quite hilarious actually...

Funny. It is up to par with Takeuchi Tetsuya's other impressive works. The fast sequences, sudden camera switches, interesting angles, the amount of drawings, the natural movement not restricted by unnecessary clean character rendering. He can certainly provide slow-motion blank and clean sequences but his appeal lies in that fast paced animation, as seen in several ROD TV episodes (#13 had very remarkable fight scenes done by him), Kamichu #4 or NHK #24 where he worked together with Matsumoto Norio, whose style Takeuchi seems to have partly inherited, imho they are very alike in their style.

Overall I would like to see more productions with such a good cut amount and animators being let loose free on certain scenes or even whole episodes. Nowadays you see too often a high head count in the credits but they all do very little contribution and the episodes still look quite bad.

Especially other "music" anime should take notice of how well such a concert animation can be done. I wish at least one Nana episode had a fraction of the drawings used for the concert in Manabi Straight 11.

Episode 11 was perhaps ufotable's attempt to show Kyoto Animation that other studios can pull off band concerts just as well. It was a bit too long, though.

Oh, delicious Momoha!

But anyway very nice work, makes for an excellent wallpaper. I think I'm gonna use it when it gets warmer outside.

Right, that's going straight onto my desktop; tho it'd be sad to lose Hazmat Momoha.

It's not that hard to do, I mean really, the only issue to deal with is proper timing and length. Go watch Macross 7 or any Macross for that matter and you get that "Being There" fervor and goosebumps. Dancougar, Gravitation, Beck, they've all pulled off the band scene spectacularly. Being overly long is a detraction though, especially if your episode length is about 25 minutes. That's why Haruhi got it right, one full song and then start the other song and fade away to show that the concert is still going, but you've skipped ahead.

There are cast comments on the Manabi Straight game site. Here is a very rough translation of Hirano Aya's comments about playing Mei. I'll put the comments and photo in spoilers, just to save space.
