Hello,

I subtitled Simoun eps 15. You can get the .ass file here.
http://okisutoro.sakura.ne.jp/wowo/w...5dsimoun15.zip

I used Sabbu for it but I'm going to try Aegisub next, I didn't know about it till after I finished it. Sorry about the font I didn't know how to change it.

This is my first sub, let me know if the timing is off or something.
Some things might sound a bit awkward, because in Japanese most sentences do not include "I" or "you" or "they", which leaves some sentences pretty ambiguous. I tried not to infer things and translate things as literally as possible. I also tried to get each character's different speech patterns too (polite, proper, etc).

Anyway, hopefully you all enjoy. Cheers to a great anime.

Good job, wowo.
You are really fast!
I'm impressed.

And as for the title of ep 16, which was originally known as "Messis" but later as "The Emerald Ri-Maajon"
They announced an apology on the official website about the change of the title.
It seems they leaked the temporary title in a magazine, but changed it later.
Unusual case, but understandable....

Nice job, wowo.

What a show. We love it so much that we are all willing to pitch in and help bring it to others. It makes me proud of the people who are fans of Simoun, so many of whom seem to be both willing and able to do that.

Having just watched ep15 for the third time (or was it the fourth?), I really get the feeling that this is art. I find more in it, and more enjoyment, each time I watch.

Maybe the title could be translated simply "One by one."
Spoiler for ep15:

Wow, thanks guys.

How long does subbing usually take? Translating ep15 took about 3-4 hours, that's long enough for me.

The title can also mean "alone, alone again" so I tried to capture the double meaning the best I can (yeah, I know it's awkward).

Gathering up feedback to put out a draft takes under an hour for me; doing a full edit on an episode fresh from a translator can take an hour or a whole evening, depending on the translator. Translating episode 1 took me a very long time, but that's because I'm a beginner at Japanese (and will be relying on good TL checkers :-) ), rather than anything inherent in the time it takes to produce an episode. In the past, we've sustained a pace of over two episodes per week; the reason why it isn't faster isn't that it takes a long time to produce a subtitle file, but rather that we tend to go through draft after draft until everything is just right and no one spots any minor mistakes, or places where a line could be better.

I'm hoping that we'll start cranking out 2-3 episodes per week again, and get caught up with the air date before the series ends.

Thanks for the effort, wowo.

Not the most eventful of episodes, alas. I think we already knew it was tough to boss around people like Aaeru and Floe.

nah, word by word translation might allow the sense of "alone, alone again," but not the general sense of the phrase.
"hitoribochi(一人ぼっち)" rather than "hitori (一人)" would suit the sense of solitude, IMO.

Really? Well, my Japanese isn't perfect so maybe I'm wrong here.
How about lines such as:
「私はいつも一人であった」 「私はまた一人だった」 「一人の時が多い」 「私は一人、また一人だった」
Where literally it's "one person" but has sad (lonely) connotations?

hey , my jap skill comes from listening anime but the (hitori) (mata) (hitori) sort of emphasise the hitori (single/alone/1-person) word , making it a phase and more dramatic which is suitable for a title

whereas hitori(bochi) would have added extra meaning to the word (kanji+hir) making it commonplace , like for sentances . but titles aren't sentances unless its school rumble

besides kanji = chinese and the hitori kanji = 1-person / alone in chinese :P

The Yuri Hime site hasn't updated for V5 yet, but Amazon's listing includes Simoun in the contents. Which is what we'd all expected, but it's nice to find confirmation all the same.

As I posted earlier, my Japanese girflriend explained that it's a phrase that really means something like, "one by one" or "one after another"... and usually refers to something like when people dies one after another.

Alright, I asked five Japanese friends who lived and still lives in Japan (one was a Japanese person who was a literature major) to make 100% sure, and they all said that 「一人、また一人」 does have a nuiance for "alone, alone again".

The "one person at a time" meaning is very clear, which is why I tried to include both meanings. I still think it'll be an incorrect translation to ignore one of the two meanings, but hell, it's just a title so it's not such a big deal I guess. I'll leave it to the offical Simoun translators to choose what they wish. Whew!

Now I'm sorry I ever mentioned the title, lol. Not really. I'm glad to get such full information. It's definitely good to try to convey as many of the connotations of a word/phrase as possible, as long as the end result sounds sufficiently natural (not necessarily completely natural) in English. I love translating, partly for the sake of that desperate balancing act. Translation is fundamentally impossible. We just do the best we can.

If native Japanese say alone, alone again could be read from the phrase,
why wouldn't I accept it?
Ep 15 does have the thread of alone, alone again concerning Neviril and Paraeitta.
This may have been be intended from the beginning.

How to contain both the general sense and the connotation is....
well, that surely blows up my mind.

edited)
If we can't find a natural English expression to contain both meanings,
maybe a title like one by one
and then giving a commentary at the end of ep 15, to explain the possibility of the original title's connotation.
If the staff intended another hidden sense,
even Japanese audience would have recognized it after watching ep 15.
