Let me get a little more into the Lasso Tool

Here's another sample Pic:

Here's the same picture showing only the outline and base color.

As you can see in Fig. 1, her left arm has been selected using the Lasso Tool. There are a few ways to do this. One way is to use the Polygon Lasso Tool and select the section you want to work with. Or you can select the Outline Layer (I'm refering to the layer with the line art, the base color and the outline are on 2 separate layers) and use the Magic wand to select the area you want to work with.

Now, on Fig.2 I created another layer for tones. With this layer on top of the base color layer, I can add the tones (shadowing) to her arm. I created a picture zoomed in on the arm. Here you can see that he airbrush tool only colors the area selected. From here you can add shadowing to the image with out interferring with the other areas or the base color.

I know that these are the basics, but you must master the basics, then let your imagination take you further.

Hope this helps some of you.

I use Paintshop pro 8 for basic coloring and cleaning of the lines, and shading, highlighting and assembling.

I only use Photoshop 7 for effects that PSP doesn't have,

and I use UT2003, Terragen, Forrester and POVray for backgrounds and small objects such as weapons...

after all that is assembled I resize the picture down to 1600 x 1200 and it's done

Here's another picture to help understand the concept of using layers.

NOTE: The Highlights layer is gray only to show what's on the layer since the only color used on that layer is white.

Thanks for the tutorial, Peppstar. I was doing something like that with colouring, but I was not sure how to do highlights.

Great Stuff PeppstaR! I can do only up to the base color for now.

I have some software questions for you guys: What's CS? What company makes Open Canvas? And are there any Photoshop plug-ins that you recommend?

Basically just a flashy new name for Adobe's current product line...

OpenCanvas
As far as I know it is made by PortalGraphics... I know they are selling it now; but I'm not 100% sure if they originally wrote it or if they bought the rights to it from someone else ...

PlugIns
Depends what you want them to do -- you can get plugins for almost anything. A place to start would be ThePlugInSite .

I usually use Adobe Photoshop, but I'm not really good at it so for cleaning my linearts I still prefer using MS Paint

PeppstaR: you should make one of those tutorial sites. That's the best explanation about layers I have ever seen!

Thanks for the help Peppstar! I usually use Photoshop but I'm not very good. The thing I have the most trouble with is clearing the line art so that the lines are pretty solid and black, not different shades of grey. Whenever I color there always seem to be grey spots on the lines...

I agree with Love Witch- that's the best tutorial I've ever read ^^

Thanks guys... I'm thinking of putting tutorials on my site. Don't have much time tho. I'll see what I can do. Since I started my site, I never got around to writing the content for the "about" section. I just don't have much time

(and for those thinking, but you have time to post here... well I have to play sometimes )
