from what i read in the previous comments, you guys are pretty hash on jap singing english words, i agree that they are kind of mess up sometimes and hard to pick out, but i think alot of the time, the song itself is what counts, as long as it sounds good, i said who cares.

i think you'll have a different perspective if you're ever fluent in both languages and tutor/teach both languages and have to listen to horrible pronunciations in both languages frequently :|

i know what you mean and i speak two languages too. anyway when i listen to j music i simply treat everything as japanese until i can pick out "janglish", if they pronounce the english words really bad, then the song becomes bad for me.

some examples of j-artist sings good english, lia, utada hikaru, olivia, rie fu

For English songs sung by the Japanese.. I've only listened to rie fu's(Life is like a Boat & I Wanna Go to a Place...). I think she's really good.

I seem to recall TMR singing an English song too, don't know whether it's good though.

If the songs are good, and the artists performing actually know what they're doing, then it's quite fine. I also like artists that try to learn English as well as they could before releasing an entire album in English, like HYDE from L'arc~en~Ciel for example.

Also may want to take a look at The Seatbelts. They did all the songs for Cowboy Bebop and several of their songs are all in English and they give an amazing performance (I would NOT believe my friend when he told me they were all Japanese jazz musicians. That actually seemed an oxymoron to me at the time). "Call Me" and "Rain" from the series and "No Reply" from the movie are all good tracks.

I have one of Maaya Sakamoto's albums where she does a couple English songs, and she does a good job, IMHO.

IMHO, English is not the easiest language to speak fluently and with a natural accent, especially coming from a language that has no "R" (as in arr), no "L", and no hard "F" sound.

Ciao!

Maaya Sakamoto's English pronunciation is wonderful considering that she speaks very little English.

Agreed.
The funny thing is she actually has fluent English. Only problem is her lyrics suck.

Even M-flo and their featured artists have questionable english.

The only artist i know of who has perfect english is Jyongri.

It's not like Hikaru has bad English, it's just that her English lyrics are too Japanese. By that I mean that in Japanese songs you can conversations and the like, but English songs are mostly statements.

I have to admit, it is pretty awesome

Though at times I heard 'wif or widouchew', it is still within acceptable range since I have heard similar ones from some other english bands. I suppose it has something to do with accent.

The English in the Gurren Lagann insert songs (i.e. Libera Me from Hell) was pretty good from what I remember.

For sure. "It's only the Fairy Tale" in Mai-HiME is a perfect example. The English grammar is poor and the pronunciation/accent of the lyrics is definitely noticeable, but the song itself is awesome, and if you can get past the poor grammar, the lyrics are pretty chilling (and perfect for the series). Plus the singer has a beautiful voice and the music is very moving, so it's still one of my favorites.

Added: The theme song for Hoshi no Koe: Through the Years and Far Away is very similar. The grammar is actually pretty good in the lyrics, but again, the lyrics are very heartfelt (esp considering the plot of the anime) and the singer/music is exceptional.

Ciao!

I don't see why people hate Utada Hikaru's English album (Exodus, not the crappy one she made when she was 13). It's pretty deep, with some fresh new melodies and interesting background instrumentals. The lyrics have a deeper layer of meaning than most of the songs in the US, and take more than one listen to get used to.

And her English doesn't hurt my ears.

Anyone mention Summer Days by Do As Infinity yet?

I didn't know that it was in English till I went and read the lyrics but it's only one song among their other great songs so no reason to stop listening to them.

Why even? Because it's from GSD?

Well, Kanon has pretty fluent english. I couldn't tell that she was Japanese when I heard her song.

Leah Dizon, although not Japanese but sings Jap songs, also speaks English like a natural, well, prolly because she is. .

And Utada Hikaru's songs are awesome man, why do you people dislike it so much?

And if any of you here watched School Rumble Nigakki, I would say whoever was singing Karen's song was pretty good. The lyrics don't make much sense, but it is still alrite. . .
