I've tried installing both the mplayer linked in the first post of this thread and the one from the official site. No luck getting either to work properly upon installation. I'm running a iMac G5 1.8Ghz PPC with 1GB memory and OSX 10.3.9 and I've also installed X11 from a link earlier in the thread.

After I've installed the program, I restart my computer, then run the disk utility to repair permissions (which I also did before installing). In either case when I try to run any files I get the following errors in the console log:

Domain (hu.mplayerhq.mplayerosx) not found.
Defaults have not been changed.

I get this error with any kind a file I try running (avi, mkv, etc.)

I'm the admin, can't see how I could be having issues with certain libraries not correctly installed when the installer is run. I'm also not sure if I should be completely removing all the files on my computer with "mplayer" before I try reinstalling.

I was running the older pre.08 (spl?) version, and it was working fine, but ever since I tried to upgrade to the newest version, I can't get either version to work anymore.

Anything anyone can think of for me to try would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Okay. So after finally reading through the errors in this thread, I think there's a simple (and suspected) cause of the problem here.

Spoiler for errors:

And there were a few other people with similar errors... the common denominator in all of these errors, from reading this thread seems to be this - MacOS X 10.3.x (usually 10.3.9).

Sadly then, I have to conclude that my build of MPlayer, at the least, requires Tiger and higher. Since I'm compiling on a Tiger machine, and since I'm using the Tiger dev tools... this is perhaps understandable. I've personally used it on 10.4.5 and up, without any problems whatsoever. As to the official build, they apparently require only 10.3.9, at least, so VersionTracker tells me.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to recompile for 10.3.9 - for two reasons, primarily that I don't *have* a 10.3 machine anymore, and secondly... well, Tiger *has* been out for two years now. Leopard'll be out in less than six months...

But if you're unwilling or unable to upgrade, for whatever reason - I'd suggest using VLC.

Bah, curses!

This will just push me to purchase a fancy Intel mac sooner.

I've been using VLC which works great other than the rare stuttering during fast paced action scenes, but I hate the UI compared to the one with Mplayer.

Thanks again.

You need to install X11. It's located on your install dvd, under Extra packages. Install that, reboot, and give it another shot.

Oh... and are you using a G3 based mac? As I'm not positive my version of MPlayer works on G3-based macs.

Did you actually try to reinstall it, or did you just check in the /usr/lib/X11 folder? As it sounds like you are missing some support libraries for X11, hence me assuming it's not installed properly... might be worth just trying to reinstall it, just to check.

Otherwise... which version of MPlayer are you trying to use? As from you log, it's accessing the mplayer_noaltivec binary, and as far as I was aware (but have never really confirmed!) that's a binary that is used on G3 macs. Possibly Intel macs now too, being as they don't use altivec either... So are you using the official MPlayer build (from mplayerhq.hu), or are you using thr's? If you're using mine, it most likely won't work... well, okay, it'll work fine in Rosetta (I've tested it) but it isn't native.

Well, I did try to go to the link on the Apple site to get X11 and the update there and on trying to install both i got the notification that the version on my macbook is the most up-to-date version of X11.

As for the version of Mplayer, I downloaded the version that was available on the first post of this thread (the one for Intel Macs).
I guess its called MPlayer OSX SAC.....

Wait a sec, the latest MPlayer 1.0rc1 seems to decode ASS subtitles just fine. Well, excepting that the timing is off by a second and a half when they're embedded in an MKV file—I have to extract them with MKVToolnix and reference them separately. I'm trying to watch Romeo x Juliet. Is there something about this version here that's different? And, if so, why isn't it easier to find elsewhere?

(talking about andiyar's version)
1. it's compiled with fontconfig so you actually get the attached fonts too, and not only pretty colored Helvetica or something
2. it's quite a bit newer than the now rather ancient 1.0.rc1 (1.0rc1 is about 6 months old now, a LONG time in this case)
3. it doesn't seem to have your negative delay issue (which, by the way, sounds EXACTLY like a known bug on Windows, although that one only applies to SRT AFAIK)

As for the reason it's not easier to find, well... if you want MPlayer you know where to find instructions on how to compile it. Or at least that's what the MPlayer team seems to think. Also, fansubbers are pretty much the only people who actually use the SSA stuff.

alright, for people using the intel build posted here (mplayer osx sac) who are getting an error message about a missing .dylib file, here's how i solved the problem.

step 1: download only the X11 update from apple's website. it takes a while, so start it first.

step 2: stick in your os x install disc. there are two X11 install packages on the disc, one is X11SDK.pkg, found under xcode tools/packages

now, originally i had just installed this one, and it didn't help. but it doesn't hurt, and maybe you need the combination of both. i kinda doubt that, but just for the sake of reproducing what i did exactly, i have both installed.

you need the other one, X11User.pkg, which you cannot just browse to it by clicking on folders. located in /Volumes/Mac OS X Install Disc 1/System/Installation/Packages (use apple-shift-G in finder and copy/paste)

thats the one you need. after it is installed, install the update you downloaded (X11 Update 2006)

then you can start up MPlayer, and stick in "-ass -embeddedfonts -fontconfig" under additional parameters.

well it worked for me.

This may be a little off subject, but from what little i've read about what could be avaliable in the next version of quicktime is an implementation of h.264 high profile... thanks to them now supporting blu-ray standards. which is HP if i'm not (totally) mistaken?

Well, with SAC I can play the H.264 releases of Romeo x Juliet (in MPlayer OSX or CoreVideo mode) and the subtitles work nicely. But the DivX versions don't display the video in any of the three available modes (Quartz, MPlayer OS X, or CoreVideo).

I prefer the H.264 releases, of course, but is there anything that can be done to fix this?

That would be interesting, do you have a link or something to that info ? I don't really follow Mac news much :P. I'm guessing that new version doesn't come out till Leopard is released? Which if I recall was just massively delayed .

Hrm. Interesting, I can't say I've read anything about Apple adding to the QT spec to decode blu-ray. Yes, Blu-ray is High Profile h.264 (as well as VC-1 & MPEG-2, of course), but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be added to QuickTime. Apple might add support for Blu-ray in a similar fashion to DVDs, namely, just build in the decoder into the playback app and ignore the rest of the system - which is why only DVD Player on a default MacOSX install can play DVDs. Yes, you can get the QT MPEG-2 plugin (or you can buy Final Cut), but that's a tad different here - firstly it didn't appear for ages, and secondly, I can't see much motivation for Apple to include it. Ideally for them, if you're authoring Blu-ray content on the Mac you'll be using Final Cut & DVDSP to do your work for you - and neither of those apps supports using h.264 HP yet do they? Actually, let me rephrase, Compressor 3 does, but it requires use of the Telestream plugin, which allows encoding into VC-1 & h.264. Hence, not an Apple/QT solution there.

Well. Unless I'm misunderstanding how Episode (Telestream) works. That said, it is a $500+ app, so... either way, not highly relevant here I think. ^^
