Furusato Saisei Nihon no Mukashi banashi

Also known as "Folktales of Japan"....

Here is the anibd link: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl...anime&aid=9016

It was announced a month ago here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...nime-announced

The summary of the show is:

"Each episode in the series will tell different folklore, myth, legend, and festival origin stories from across Japan. The story of the first episode, which comes from Japan's Tohoku region, will revolve around an elderly couple who receive a mysterious dog who brings them good fortune. The couple's neighbors then become jealous and kidnap the dog. The animation studio Tomason is producing the series."

It has been picked up by CR and the first ep has already aired (and been subbed).

****

I have seen ep 1 and ... well ... it isn't that bad, I guess. Kinda curious actually. I wonder if anyone else has watched this or is planning to?

I watched the first episode, and it very much seemed to be aimed at a young audience.

Then again, from a 'gaijin' viewpoint, this is the folklore from another country, which we know little about, and it could be interesting to watch for that reason.

I'm kind of surprised Crunchyroll picked this up, but I'll give it a few more episodes to get a feel for it.

It's a cultural thing.

I watched it, and found it charming for it's complete lack of irony. And it's for a good cause, too.

Yeah ... sure, production values are low and such, but the tales (three 7 minute long stories approx) are kinda interesting and interesting enough for someone who is unfamiliar with them.

Nothing earth shaking. But certainly not "bad" or anything of the sort.

They actually covered one I knew this week - "Little One Inch". Most of the stories seem to involve an old couple who lives in the mountains, usually with a sneaky neighbor.

Tip for new parents - don't name your sons "Little One Inch". It won't go over well once they get to middle school.

I was wondering where the thread for this series was; should have kept more of an eye out for its Japanese series name, I guess.

Actually, one thing I'd really like to see (but ought not to expect by any means) is for at least one of the tales offered to be from one of the other peoples in what is now Japan; such as the Ainu in Hokkaido, or those traits from the old Ryukyuan Kingdom which may yet persist in parts of Okinawa.

Finally finished up ep 4 ... and must admit that I really liked the story of the nightingales. Just my type of fairy tale.

Oh yes - the ED to this series deserves more love imo. It's really quite beautiful.

So ... ep 13 has aired, and it looks like there is to be an ep 14 as well ... does that mean this series is getting 24-6 eps?

Not that I am complaining, mind you - I enjoy it. But it is definitely one that does not seem to get a lot of attention....
