If you can hold out until July, Intel's next-gen processor, based on the conroe core, will be coming out. It is Intel's short pipeline answer to the Athlon 64 series and it is supposed to kick some major ass. You can google it or just check out Overclockers.com's Intel forum for more details (don't be put off by the "overclocker's" part. Everyone there is very nice and will help you out with questions you have. Overclockers are the best people to ask about quality parts imho, as their tolerance for bad parts is much lower than most people.).

I'm planning on upgrading this summer, too, and this is what I'm going to use. I need to upgrade an aging and starting to fail 1.8A Northwood @2.4 that is still using RDRAM (heh) that I am using as my anime "server." I'll let someone else comment on the PS as, as RaistlinMajere so politely pointed out in another thread, I'm not really current on dual 12V rail power supplies.

As far as I know, they aren't out yet. I think there is one MSI board that works with them, but it would be better to wait until boards specifically come out for the conroe come out.

AMD released their AM2 socket solution/processors just a few days ago, and when shipments arrive to the locales you'll see some price drops. Not sure if it's happened at Newegg yet, I haven't been keeping track. That would only matter to you if you decide to stick with AMD for now though.

monarch has all the am2 cpus that amd has released in stock

http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merch...amdstore#latch

if you want to get socket am2, just know that the performance increase of the cpu's from socket 949 is about 1%. the only real difference between 949 and am2 is that it supports ddr2 (finally). however amd is holding off their newer generation cpu's untill the end of the year/next year. so this might be a good reason to buy am2 just to be ready for the newer cpu's.
however if you the best right now then i suggest you wait untill the end of july when intel releases their core duo 2. it will without a doubt outperform everything amd currently has to offer and even beyond. the prices are also going to be really affordable.

the basic parts to a personal computer consist of:

Case
Power Supply
Mother Board
CPU
RAM Stick(s)
Graphic Card(s) (optional if your motherboard has onboard, mainly matx mother boards)
Sound Card (optional because all motherboards have onboard)
Hardrive(s)
Optical Drive(s)
Operating System(s)
