The emotion chip is basically the old PS2 hardware. If your PS3 has an emotion chip, it can play ALMOST (Guitar Hero 2...grumble grumble) any PS2 game. Newer PS3's as well as PS3's in Europe (and Australia) don't have the chip. Instead, they attempt to emulate the hardware with software. This is tougher to do, so not all games are supported. I have no idea what the ratio of support to non-support is, though.

For the best, just buy a PlayStation 2 for all your PS2/PS1 titles. There is a new PS2 model(SCPH-79000) coming which will most likely drop PS2's price to $99.99 sometime by the end of the year. Still has alot of life left.

To make it simple the emotion chip is just a built-in PS2 inside of the PS3, without it you would need a emulator as wsheit stated above to play older games. But the emulator does not guarantee that all games will be playable.

If you're just looking to play PS3 games, then it shouldn't be a problem.

Like Aka said it's best to just have your old PS2 around... unless you have the emotion engine then the hell with your PS2. Takes up less space with wires and what not.

Ill admit I was a little bummed about the price drop since I had just bought a PS3 a month ago. Today Amazon's price dropped and I remembered they have a 30 day price guarantee. I had ordered the PS3 June 9. I lucked out, $100 refund w00t!! If I had ordered a day before I would of gotten screwed!

It's like 99% w/ EE, 95% w/ software.

That depends on what TV you have. My old PS2 using component* leads on my LCD TV looked like shit. But PS2 games on my PS3 using HDMI + upscaling look much better. It's still not great: but a lot better. I know a lot of people say they can't see a difference, but I sure can!

*) That's component not composite. You know, with the red-green-blue connectors, which is supposedly the best way to hook up a PS2 to a LCD TV.

I do know a few who still(or just don't know at all about it) use S-Video on their HDTV..... which really looks bad.

I was talking about Backward compatibility library list, now playing your PlayStation 2 on a Big TV/HDTV for me is a whole different story.... Even with a High-Tech HDTV, my PlayStation 2 still doesn't look great on my HDTV with Component, for that I play my PS2 on a 23" lcd widescreen instead of a 46" HDTV >_>; .... Looks more smoother for me. Now I don't own a PlayStation 3 yet, but once I do I'll test it out once more.

unless the tv is 47 inches i dont think its going to make that much of a difference to most people GHD must be nice using HDMI as your lowest standard

Even with the PS3's new lower price, and since it is not compatible with older JP software, and since almost no anime is out on blue ray here in the US, it looks like I won't be purchasing a PS3 till way into 2008 even though I had planned to get one.

I was really looking forward to owning Air on blueray also, even just as a showpiece.

I saw an article somewhere (kotaku I think) a week or so ago where Sony was saying that they don't pay to get exclusives (as opposed to Microsoft). Can that possibly be true? If so, it WOULD explain why they keep losing exclusives left and right.

I'm still of the opinion that Sony will win this generation, but if they lose MGS4 and FFXIII, I might have to rethink things. Didn't these guys learn anything with Assassin's Creed?

• PS3 Price Drop Bonus: For a limited time receive a Blu-ray Remote Controller & Six Blu-ray discs FREE when you buy a PS3 from amazon.com.
That's better than the 5 Blu-Ray discs offer.

There are many sites claiming sales of PS3 are skyrocketing after the price drop.

I called it long ago. All the PS3 doubters need to realize that it is a real player in this game. Sales figures are already jumping through the roof after the price drop. Amazon is reporting a 2700% increase in sales in one day. Yes, I said 2700%. Sit back and watch the PS3 continue climbing and it will become the “must have” system before the year 2008 rolls around.

I don't think it's a matter of learning anything, it's a matter of upholding principles.
After they went public with the "they don't pay for exclusives," there's no way that they would turn around and start paying for exclusives. Don't worry though, a lot of the good exclusives are first-party titles.

PS. I like that Sixaxis on the 80GB pic. That red light looks sexe.

Damnit, too bad I'm going to Cali in a couple of days, or else I'd buy another one right now. For anyone interested, Circuit City website has a 60GB PS3 + Extra controller for $499. The controller appears in your cart when you checkout. PS3 + Sixaxis

Just went and looked at the offer. It's official- I'm STARTING to feel like I should have waited for a deal like this to come along. Especially if these still have the emotion chip. Apparently, you get Memento when you order and then send for the other five (which are from the same list that's been floating around). With an extra sixaxis, that's a darn good deal. At this rate, there's going to be a 2-for-1 deal tomorrow.

Memento? Seriously?

That's one of the best movies I've ever watched... and on Blu-Ray? I cry.

I do not see why anime would look that much better on Blue Ray than a regular DVD. It would only look SLIGHTLY better if it looks better at all. The only things on Blue-Ray that would have any significant difference are live action movies or shows since there are a lot of ways to enhance them, but not so much with something two-dimensional.

In short, it would be like using top-grade digital coloring and improving image resolution on the pictures of "Go Dog Go".

Or maybe since the blue ray has more data space on it, they'll be able to put like a couple seasons on one disk? o_o

On Blu-ray? They won't just put anime from a original DVD to Blu-ray, look at Air - costs over 200 alone with every episode including Air in Summer(Not the movie though) and it looks beautiful unlike the ordinary DVD's. But uh... well an entire season on a BD collection might be more pricie than original season # on DVD.
