Has anyone seen Ashita no Joe? aka Tomorrow Joe or Victorious Boxer?

I just got back from the video store and I had asked the guy if he had Hajime no Ippo, he thought he did but it turned out to be a boxing anime called Ashita no Joe. It looks old but I'm really in the mood for another good boxing anime after watching Ippo. It has good reviews on animenfo (but when don't they?) Has anyone watched this one yet? The version he had was a Hong Kong bootlege, does anyone know if it's availible anywhere on fansub?

I've got scripts finished for the first two episodes, but I gave up on the project due to the lack of interest. Joe is one of the most famous characters in Japan, even now after all these years he still appears on billboards advertising for jeans and other stuff. It's a really great show that runs for about 75 episodes and then goes into Ashita no Joe 2, which is another 25 or so episodes I think. There's also another spin-off series that's not nearly as good, but actually rather recent called Futari no Joe. Anyway, that's all I know. Help me stir up interest and maybe I'll get back to work on subbing it. (I need to get together 18,800 yen for the first box set first, though ).

Well if there ever was enough interest, I wonder if you could use the Hong Kong version. I would have to get a dvd player on my computer to rip them with (and learn how to rip dvd's) but I've been thinking about getting a dvd burner when I get some more money anyways and I'm sure that would work. He has two different box sets, so I'm guessing that would cover both series.

The only thing im not sure about is not only if you can use them, but is that considered acceptable. I thought I read that the group that subs victory gundam was using the HK versions.

I would think because of Hajime no Ippo's huge popularity, people would definatly want to at least give this series a shot.

Ashita no Joe is an awesome manga. I've never seen the anime... for various reasons that would include and be limited to me being poor. However I'm sure it must be good... unless they decided to give Joe some kinda gatling gun or something... you know, his hair opens up and a barrage of bullets mows down the opponent. That'd crap it up real good.

LiquidAnime is doing (the 2nd series of) Ahita no Joe.
They're up to episode 4. I believe they do use HK DVDs (not sure), but they use their own subtitles, not the crappy HK ones, so it doesn't really matter.

Damn, I hope they decide to list it on bit-torrent at some point. I suck to much at mIRC, it would take me half a night to get myself in line to download.

If you could get some high-quality rips from the HK DVDs then it might not be a bad idea (most of the discs from HK I've seen have had poor video quality). The only episodes I have right now are all poorly encoded 56-60 megabyte files. It wouldn't bother me any to buy the Japanese boxset, though, since I've been wanting to get it anyway. The only problem is getting the cash for it. I'd also feel better if I had a good team working with me on it, that way I could make sure it was done well. Maybe I could see if Liquid Anime would want my scripts...
