My upload's faster than my (slow)download

I'm totally new to this, so I confess I'm pretty ignorant about it. Currently I've uploaded about twice as much as I've downloaded. Is this normal? Also I know the upload and download speeds depend on your internet's speed, but how do I check that? I have pretty fast internet and it seems like it's downloading pretty slowly, but since I don't have the numbers I can't be sure.

Did you set the upload manually or did you set it at unlimited hoping your connection would know how to sort out the protocol overhead (which it can't)?

First try one of these sites to test your connection speed, then you need to set your upload limit to somewhere around 80% of your max up speed. Trying higher/lower limits over time will give you your best ratio of up/down speeds.

If you leave your upspeed to unlimited it can choke your connection leaving little for downloading. My max unlimited up is about 42kb, while downloading I set it to 35kb, this gives me good download speeds while still decently uploading (for my connection), then when strictly seeding I set it to unlimited to seed faster.

Whoa...never seen anything like that for long periods...
However, that's normal when you're just starting a torrent back up again--if it's that, it'll clear up in 5-10 minutes.

Looks to me like you need to switch to a client that doesn't lie, cheat, steal and otherwise do stupid things.

I was using Bittornado, but I switched to Azureus and it's a lot better now. With bottornado what I set the upload speed to didn't seem to affect the actual upload speed at all; if I set it to 20 kb/s it'd still be going 36, and if I set it to 40 it's still going 36. Once I switched to Azureus my upload speeds stayed the same, but my download speeds got literally ten times better. I was downloading the anime air, which had between 7 and 9 seeds, so it wasn't that. My internet is broadband cable. It's pretty fast. Like I said though, my download speeds have gotten much better with Azureus.

That's because BitComet is the same core as BitLord. No change in cheating.

Another thing you can try is increasing the upload slots in this matter.

Example your max upload is 100KB
So the max you want to upload at one time is 80KB
You want to give 5-10KB per upload slot.
So about 10 upload connections per torrent in this case.
So you can have about 2 torrents runnin at the same time.

The more people you upload to the greater the chances of finding a higher performing peer.

BitComet's upload slot management system is quite horrid. You're better off with BitTornado, ABC, Azureus or µTorrent.
