If you get to make your own Gundam series...

What would you focus on? The plot, the mech designs, the characters? What do you think the past Gundam series have lacked and you would like to expand upon? What pissed you off the most in a Gundam series? Etc!

Least Favourite Gundam series: Gundam Seed Destiny
Favourite Gundam series: Turn A Gundam

Themes
I personally think if we have to make something different in a Gundam series we'd have to switch the themes to something else. No more 15 year old jumps on a Gundam and kills everyone, no more "attack-every-part-of-the-suit-but-not-the-cockpit". Gundam series nowadays are so bland and similar to its predecessors...it has to change! It has to introduce new kinds of problems and goals to achieve in order to stay alive.

Plot
Set in an alternate universe. The plot would feature two major sides in the conflict just like all other Gundams. However it would begin with 5 major forces on Earth and Space all together. As the series progresses the 5 forces join and eliminate each other until the two major sides form (earth and colonies). Thats the setting of the universe. However the story itself would focus on an experienced, skilled and cunning soldier sent on an undercover mission. He covers himself as a rookie and the story would explain how he manipulates the people around him and gains ranks in the Earth Federation, using his piloting skills and political power he secretly assists the colonies. The story would also focus on his relationships with the characters around him, softening up and truly developing feelings for his meant-to-be foes. Ultimately he has to sacrifice people he loves from both sides.

Characters
No more newtypes and coordinators just plain human beings. The characters would all be 18 or above. The main character would be in his early 20s (23 or 24), disguised as a rookie soldier but in fact is already quite skilled and experienced. I believe we also need to revive a character like Bright Noa (Seed tried to but she just served as fan service with juggling boobs), a tactical leader that has a lot of tension with his squadron...but eventually learns and becomes a reliable captain. An actually powerful and useful female pilot....Lunamaria had the potential but for some odd Fukuda reason she became quite useless at the end of Destiny. And how can we miss a true arch rival like Char ! I was also thinking of making the main protagonist the mask man of the series......

Mobile Suits

The gundams would be nerfed, not as powerful as the Gundams in seed in terms of fire power...but remains its speed. Their size would also be reduced...more like V Gundam and F91. There are also other MS brands that are on par with the Gundams like the gelgoogs. Mobile Armors would also play a bigger role, more advanced and sometimes more useful than MSes. For example during Air-Ground support, a VTOL plane would be used instead of an MS. During hit-and-run tactics, Fighter planes would be more useful than aerial combat MSes...etc. Oh yea...and scrap the acronyms...they really annoy me...especially the G.U.N.D.A.M OSes (the idea of using an OS itself is great but the acronym kills me).

Anyway thats what ive thought so far...feel free to comment on them! Please express your own ideas as well!

edit: grammar errors

I actually has 2 ideas for my own Gundam, one is the final sequel of SEED, and another is my own original. I'll do my the original one first, since I'm not sure if Sven will live past Stargazer to be included among my EA's elite 5. Hell, I'm not even 100% sure for the lineup of the 4 Horsemen.

Theme

Past demons. The miniscule value of a soldier as a disposable dog of war. The morality of the end results over the methods employed. Rather than creating a sudden cast that happens on time, I'm opting for a small group of military renegades/mercenaries formed of a few soldiers who escaped from treachery and betrayal hoping to redeem their past mistakes and revolt against those who lied to them for their selfish ambitions of an utopia. Or is it really that simple? It involves the theme of people facing their past demons as murderers and slaughterers who killed children, women, soldiers mercilessly for the sake of an country that doesn't exist.

Plot
Original = AU. A dying planet of Earth. Set in an era where war and civil war erupts everywhere, with countries often at war with each other, due to technological improvements that allows even the smallest countries to match against bigger countries, due to employments of MS. There exist no major force on Earth other than the newly formed alliance of the Igniz with several other countries, which caused the temporary end of World War VI. Set in a less-modern timeline, the existence of colonies is limited to only one where several thousands people live in luxury. An existing border of the ultimate rich and the suffering on Earth where the world decays with each bullet shot.

Characters

Veteran soldier who questions the value of his life, the reasons for his murders, and a meaningless revolution due to the lost of life's purpose when his country was removed from the map. Teenager who is forced into the battlefield and forced to kill to make a living. Cast of superb soldiers who's living the bane of their existence as they continue their endless days of killing. Soldiers who suffer from insanity and mental grief due to loss of family in war, etc.

MS

Extremely old school. Devoid of beams. Vibro-blades. Real ammos. Electric-rail guns. NO GUNDAM CAN FLY. AT ALL. Except space flight of course.

Like I couldn't give it a try since I've been going around with idea for a Fan Fick for some time now...

Calm voice of a young man starts the first episode, voice of a person who hid for a moment from life and is thinking about current situation.
Cosmic Era Hachijuu (note: 80 in japanesee). It was seven years ago now that Second Bloody Valentine war ended and our exhausted world has finally achieved some relative peace and stabilisation. At first glance, it seems that old wounds were healed by now and Earth is finally rising up from ashes and devastation that were results of two wars from the past. But that is not the full truth. Many problems remain unresolved, and I'm afraid that might ignite yet another circle of anger and hatred.

Historic and political background
After the second war Earth was terribly devastated. Few countries survived in rather good shape, even fewer of them had any power to do anything beside trying to solve their internal problems. One of them for sure was Orb with rising star of it's leader, Cagali Yula Asha, who, tough young, seems to became strong, decided leader.
But even power of orb was like a single drop for the ocean of needs. Milions of people fight poverty and hunger in decimated cities of Europe. Diseases which once were tought to be completely erased, spread now among nations.
Fall of Europe wounded those African and South American countries which had strong trade bounds. Without the source of high-tech and rafined products and no markets to sell they raw goods, less developed countries decay economically.
Of all nations, PLANT came out from war in relatively best shape. Led by wise, decided yet charming and popular Lacus Clyne, space colonies nation rebuilt quickly and is expanding further and further into space in search for new resources.
There is, however, an internal problem that PLANT is facing. Huge part of colonies population don't want to forget grudges and demons from the past and remains blind and deaf to the cries of hungry masses on the planet. This faction has it's representants in the council and is strong enought to oppose Clyne's faction on many occasions. This produces a situation in which PLANT remains neutral to many problems that Earth is trying to resolve, simply because it cannot decide his stance in the never-ending quarrels in both populace and High Council.
And here many problems arouse. If there is something that Earth is full of, it's weapons. Earth Alliance has teared apart and died long ago and forgotten supply bases aren't rare sight. Piracy is spreading and even prospering PLANT can't supress them, not to mention powerless Earth's countries. Terrorism is spreading also.
Somewhere behind remains Mars, as always nearly nonpresent and interested in it's own plans and matters. It's long range reconaissance and survey posts have picked up some strange readings recently...

Storyline
Story begins with old Kira and Asuran as private escort to Lacus on board a ZAFT cruiser that is carrying her for political conference on Earth. Somewhere between colonies and planet pirates suddenly attack from surprise and severily damage the craft in the first few seconds. Almighty duo lunches in SF and IF and fight back grunt units but then... out of nowhere new, black, deep red and gold mobile suit appears, blocking SF beam spam that was about to cripple one of pirates and then charges head on, armed in beam scythe, into melle with surprised Kira.
Two on one battle evokes while pirates, following order from new mobile suit, retreat. Guy is tough and his MS is obviously a top-notch construction so battle turns into evade-and-shot stalemate. Asuran starts to shout at the pilot on open radio channel about being a robber and murderer, but pilot throws back at him that a child stealing an apple because of hunger is justified and that their (Lacus and co.) side should be ashamed of their weakness and inability to do something about suffering populace and then dissapears with obvious use of Mirage Colloid.

Following first episode story evolves into two-way tango when new MS pilot and main character of the series decides to infiltrate ZAFT disguised as a soldier. He uses few clever hacks into ZAFT's military computer network and with a bit of sheer luck and good use of circumstance manages to quickly get his side near the old GS team. Point of view switches between two sides, as old team tries to surpress various pirate ships, escorts lacus or defends PLANT installations, playing the detectives in the meanwhile, pursuing very uncertain yet possibly existing spy, who somehow managed to sneak into ZAFT.
He on the other side, impulsive yet able to control himself (unlike Shinn :P), uses every occasion to persuade Lacus to not hold back and force PLANT to do something, she however replies that she's doing everything she can and just don't have that much power he believes she have. His secondary work is also that, using his computer skills, dive into ZAFT strategic informations to seek out weak points for his raider ship.
This, of course, cannot last forever and around ep 24-28 old team finally catches the spy, who is, much to their surprise, main character, who managed to befriend them pretty well during his time by their side. Fight evokes as he tries to get away, he beats up Shinn, mindrapes Asuran and Kira saying that everything he did, he did for the homeless people on his second ship and because of that he is justified (those two will spend next 10 eps thinking about that :P - joke) and is just a few meters from a mobile suit cockpit... when Lunamaria (on who he had a little crush) and Lacus stop him. Yet another discussion arises, this time with guns pointed at each other, but eventually Lacus breaks it saying that even she wouldn't do as he, she understand him and his reasons and that only thing she can do at the moment is to let him go. Which she does, much to Luna's shock.

Both sides then continue alone to earth, which is decaying more and more into chaos. Poor attack the rich, accusing them about making their money in the last war (which is true for some of them), rich reply that they have what they have beacuse of hard work and those who didn't anything but just cry over spilt milk have no right to complain (what is also truth for some parts of the mobs).
But this is happening too fast, to quickly... and that masked man, main character's chief rival (oh, how we like that thing :P), why is he appearing in every trouble spot? As both old team and new struggle to difuse critical situations one after another, they are closing to reveal the secret WHO is trying so hard to keep the earthlings busy and weakened.

But time runs out and shadow of whale skeleton found in deep space (the one that stands now before plant high council room) grows stronger.
And when both old team and new hero eventually come into agreement and together find the base of trouble-makers, after exhausting final battle they'll solve the puzzle only to understand the new war is coming.

But that would be the topic for the entire new series.
Because then will be said what I want to show. That lurking in shadows, saying half-truths and dancing with secrets don't work well with building up friendships. "Only working together we can solve the problems (strenght in numbers), so quit be so self-reliable you moron and just trust us!" - Cagali shouting at main character.

Some fanservice and some character developments
As you've noticed, I'm supporting the option to Shinn team up with rest of the gang. It's just because what opponents say - that he is exactly opposite to Kira. While I'm great Kira fan for his strong yet delicate heart, it's obvious that both him and Asuran lack the ability to decide and act quickly. That's where hothead Shinn comes in, charging forwards when those two hesitate, thus leading a way. He also, while can be tough, can be also most friendly for green and lost newscomers.
Lacus is with Kira, married and man, I would make that couple more lively a bit :P
Asuran is engaged with Meyrin, Cagali focused on ruling more like English Elisabeth Ist (tough I think she'll eventually find a nice guy... but Asuran was just not for her)
Shi-Lu pair still ok. Tough I would like to show that their feelings grew to be very strong. As Luna herself, who should be as good MS pilot as Shinn.
What's natural that he and Meyrin are much less dependent on each other now.
Crazy would it be if Yzaak fell in for good with Miri, result - a couple that loves each other as much as they are knocking heads everytime :P
Dearka would make fun of Asuran everytime that his mobile suits are pink and girlish :P
Kira started to write poetry? Or paint? Yes, he paints sea/ocean views!

Main Character
He's a little bit of weirdo at first glance. On one side: a loner that prefers to do his work alone or manipulate people from behind. Expert computer specialist and programmer, decent MS pilot... and a Natural. He's about.. 18-20 in the series, maybe a little bit older. He has strong need to protect and find a new home for people that had taken shelter on the pirate's ship. He put's everything into it, often overworking himself and struggling behind reason. Then he lands with the old team and the other side of the coin is revealed - that he is very sociable and friendly, quick to laugh and smile and generally lacks a group of friends with which he could just spend time - tough he won't accept that and won't admit that even for himself. He tries to push away anybody who gets too close, because he is afraid of repeating failures from the past. But hey, here we've got alimighty old team with always-workin' lacus dust! :P
He practices karate, has long, probably dark-brown, hairs. He probably had something more distinctive in his looks and I have few ideas but I'm not sure at the moment.

Technicals
No more one shot at grunt one frag of grunt. Time to show that even Strike Freedom isn't almighty. Clever tactics, good pilots and sorry winetou. Some pirates show in new constructions, made by themselves, but besides that old EA designs are used by them.
ZAFT has made some new ships designs, probably with reinforced and empowered armours, perhaps even some kind of hull polarization or phase-shit - generally primitive defense fields technology.
Maybe Mars defense forces should be shown?
And clearly, final battle mobile suits, tough appear to be common old EA designs, would show unbelieveable power, so that even all aces combined together would have huge problem fighting them. Not to mention that their pilots wouldn't be some lame grunts but should be eqal in skills to first generation Extended or even better.

Some last comments
Only brief and rare moments of laugh and fun would interrupt dark, secretive atmosphere of the series. Main character spying and working his best not to be revealed, looking behind at every corner, trying to think about every word so that it won't expose himself. Old team playing detectives, not able to trust anyone around, seeking the spy. Then spy is exposed, they feel betrayed. Chaos on earth spreading quickly, countries, nations and single people fighting with everyone. Struggle to get past the nets and intrigues of delusive individuals who seem to support the fire that engulfs the planet.
(this would also show how important is to keep together and support each other, when old team keeps on, while lone main character sunks deeper and deeper into depression, desperately trying to do something but failing one time after another;
it would be when he reconcile and team up with the rest when he regained his strenght.)
And then final, shocking truth at the end and a whale problem that was left over by Fukuda (curse him for that...) now showing it's potential.
But I don't want to be exact what I would do about this, I leave it for Your imagination, I'll post my idea later if someone will be interested.

cheers!

Themes
A general war theme would be cool, but unlike the previous series, corporations plays a heavy role in the series. Corporations control a huge amount of people's lives. Military seeks weapons, many products depends on corporation prodctivity. They hold huge amounts of political power. And most of all they are responsable for most of the violence on earth, the colonies and the Martian offshore planets. The planet is in relatively decent shape, colonies were built to feed the martian colonies as well as earth and produce resources.

Plot
Our main character is a run of the mill soldier recently left the fighting in the military forces. Learning about mercenary work being needed somewhere in a colony, he eventually finds himself in an war where money is a greater force then glory...

Characters

The main character is a battle veteran, while being a part of a well armed MS army, he had done a few bold acts of grandeur in battle. Like defeating a MS with better combat and military experience. Used a tank to stop an platoon. And general strategic knowledge (always go through a plan twice before starting). Of course he isnt very deceisive into thinking what he will do after he gets too old to fight. His comrades are a mixed bunch, some interested in joining a corporation while others just want to earn enough to settle down easy.

Mobile Suits

Well mobile Suits here arent as flashy as before, in this series, mobile suits are generally slower and more meant for heavy combat. Armor support is required for success since in bigger numbers, tanks can destroy an MS with efficiency as well as artillery. Also this series strays from flashy attacks and close up combat and focused on ranged mobile suits which spams missiles, shoots guass cannons and use lasers instead of beam weapons. Kinda Battletech ish.

I hate the idea of a girl main character. I fear that show would be more about stupid talking instead of Fightining

Depends how you make it Where does it say girls cant fight / pilot MS ? Stellar could kick some @ss

Or add someone like Lucy from Elfen Lied - now that would be nice to watch *imagines Lucy contolling a MS* *faints*

Besides - the whole GSD has more talking than fighting. It would make some crappy show where the main focus would be on fighting instead of storry (imo) - i enjoy a good storry, i dont like dense shows.

Storry and battles are two completely un-related things. Battles alone wont make any kind of storry.

At least in my book i prefer a good storry wayyyyy over battle scenes. Its all good if both are supplied in a good quantity, but to me the storry is way more important.

Funny, with 20 years of history behind them, I have yet to see a single Gundam serie that deals with aliens, or territories beyond our solar system.

If I wanted a new Gundam serie, I'd want one that deals with the abovementioned subject matter.

Stargazer is promising in that it is actually the first Gundam story about space exploration. We will see how future series turn out...

Beginning: People in Earth start to move in space and create colony. After while because of lack of food and energy for both colony and earth. The Goverment on Earth started to focus more on Earth. Also Earth goverment took over mining in space (which is most important job for people in space) and took control of everything. Later on colony start a small rebellion using new weapon, mobile suit they were able to take over some of the areas that were controlled by earth. Soon more colony began to join forces and it became a war. Later on Colony were finally able to take over few bases on earth.

Character: Main character is lot like a extened or druggies from GS and GSD. He was force to be a soldier since he was child and that's all he knows.

Just roug idea.

Well, as usual, you have an interesting sense of logic. Up to date, I think I've noted only one 'clone' (if you must put it that way) of Evangelion. That is of course, Rahxephon. A good clone at that. However, I wouldn't consider either serie to be within the spectrum of Gundam.

Actually I was thinking more of Macross.

If there's one thing I want to implement to every Gundam show, it's acronyms.

Anyway, a small continuation from my original post. This time, my C.E sequel to end it all.

Spoiler for long:

Shit, any longer and I better as well plan the further arcs. I've only gotten the 1st 9 and the last 5 arcs.

Now, all I have to do is see if Sven lives past Stargazer.

@Nightengale: Wow...out of all the ideas in here so far, this is the only one that I really like. Sure, it feels like it might be story-driven rather than action-driven but it's an idea I really like.

And I really have to admit, I had an uncontrollable smile when I read about the part about Kira and Lacus.

I'm just saying the alien thing has been done before, and a lot at that. It would run the risk of being called a clone of Eva or Macross, even if it's called Gundam. Something like that would defy one of the main principles of Gundam, and that is that there are actual people inside every machine. If it was aliens, then there would be know character growth that comes from realizing you're killing someone every time you beat another mobile suit. The only thing with aliens that could retain that would be alien infection type stuff, like the Borg in Star Trek, and that's probably more cliche than anything.

Personally I'd rather Gundam stay the way it is than try to fuck it up with some "new" thing like aliens.

First off, I'd like to thank jonli for creating this thread [tips hat in gentlemanly fashion] lol. But man, honestly I have thought about making my own gundam series. Before I get into "narrative technique," I'll just say I wanted an old school feel to it. I wanted the same level (or rather a very similar level) of technological advancement as the Seed universe. Plus, I wanted to have one and only ONE Gundam throughout the entire series (though with plenty of "in-field" upgrades and/or mods).

Next, probably the most different aspect. I wanted to get away from the whole "Star-Trek" feel, i.e., always being on some battleship. Something more like 08th MS Team where you have a platoon of soldiers with a home base who have.............I guess......extended missions. Then, there's what I was thinking about having the series entirely set on Mars and Martian orbit (with lunar fortresses on the two Martian moons), but meh, if anyone actually cares about this aspect, feel free to delve into it, lol.

With "narrative technique," I definetely wanted somehting more mature. At the youngest, I felt the main character should be 22. Similar to what someone was just mentioning about inner demons, I wanted the main character to be plagued with his inner conflicts. The thing is, I was trying to come with an alternative to Newtypes without all the "said" Newtype powers and just the exceptional piloting ability. That's when I thought, "Why not have the main character have a disease that hightens his physical and mental awareness and abilities? That way, he has the great piloting abilities of a Newtype without the 'flash' and the psychic/telepathic powers."

So basically, he'd start out as a good pilot and quickly become and exceptional pilot, similar to Amuro. However, I'd say around midway in the series, I wanted the disease to begin taking its toll on the main character.........of course, he'd be dying from the disease, but the stress and fatigue from battle would just gradually speed up his eventual death. In addition, I wanted a side effect of the disease to be that the main character blanks out in mid-combat and starts have flashbacks. Possibly, something painful from his childhood, breaking up with and old girlfriend, but something more important. I wanted a flashback (and by flashback, I mean one we see from his memories, not some clip from the beginning of the series) like the one John O' Connor's father (the guy from the future) has in the first Terminator movie. You know, the flashback where he's walking around the rebel slum camp of last remaining humans on Earth and you see all these dirty, hungry, weary, soul-less civilians seeking shelter from the battlefield..........so yeah, I wanted a flashback exactly like that for him, with an enemy raid too, lol.

But yeah, I wanted the flashbacks to occur during mid-battle, so he blanks out, and a team memeber keeps screaming out, "Commander, COMMANDER!!!!" And when the main character snaps to, he's bleeding from the nose and ears (maybe the eyes too, my friend suggested it since he's got a thing for "tears of blood" ever since he saw episode 5 of Cowboy Bebop). And he realizes he's been getting his arse kicked during the whole time he was out (picture Amuro passing out in Gundam and a Z'Gok gets a whole lot of free punches in). So, obviously I wanted the series to be very dark and graphic, much more so than want we normally get in Gundam, and the real point of the main character having the disease was for you the viewer to get to know and like this character......then share the character's experiences, fears, and anxieties as he slowly but surely loses his sanity. Still, I didn't want it to be about the [war's]despair but rather, finding "light" and courage to carry on through the darkness and despair.

Hmm........there's also the matter that I wanted a large number of the Martian population to be inflicted with the disease the main character has, but I wanted the disease to produce the "Newtype" effect that it has on the main character on a very select few people within the Martian population. About the MS. I wanted the head design of the Martian army's MS to be the same as those of the Daughtress in Gundam X.....I figured that "3-eyed" head design with rabbit ear antennae would complement the Mars setting. And I wanted the same story told from a different perspective. I wanted the "good-guys" to be "Zeon" and the "bad-guys" to be the "EF." So basically, the Martians would employ their Daughtress head MS in a similar fashion to the Zeon and lose the war, but I wanted the Martians to be the side with the Gundam protoype so Gundam is on the losing side for a change. Oh, some things you wouldn't be seeing within the series: guys with masks, a lot of fan service, nor a lot of crying men (hmm...better yet, soldiers period).

Thanks. Nice to see my idea being commented rather than scorned. (( My beta reader friends scorned the idea of me destroying Kiracus and doing Kimiri instead. And they continued despite knowing my major plot twist behind all it. )) My only problem with this story is that I want to maintain proper continuity, by removing sure death characters and tying up loose ends with characters that actually exist, rather than creating OCs. I originally planned for the guy who told Canard about Kira Yamato to be the new successor to Blue Cosmos, but he turned out to be Dullindal. Back to the drawing board.

The fact that Miguel died not in Heliopolis but at Jachin Due makes stuff more complicated since I'd prefer the vague death he died at SEED Phase 2. Now I have to scavenge for the Bom Bom and see if he can live his 2nd death or I'll need an OC.

Oh, and if it pleases you more, this story won't have Lacus and Kira paired up again even in the end. The pairing is....Kira and Miriallia.

Oh, and this story is PACKED with acronyms. E.g O.N.E = Omnipotent Natural Existence and S.W.O.R.D.S = Special Weaponry Operations Regional Defence Squadron
