a bit off topic, but here's my take:
i think that there are four great noble houses, and there are lower noble houses. remember sui fong is also from a lower noble family (Fong House) serving the higher shihouin clan. i dunno about Shiba clan though, but for sure it was a former noble house/clan.

i think omaeda familly is also an aristocratic family but not one of the four great noble houses... other lower aristocratics are: (accdg to others)
ukitake and kira

genryuusai-dono is very possibly a member of an aristocratic house...
and shunsui too...

Kira actually comes from upper strata of Seiretei . I wouldnt go as to speculate as him being a noble family

I really dont wanna stir up another noble Families debate its been discussed forever in Q AND A THREAD. But Kira isnt one of the Noble families .

The Omaeda family, no history is mentioned what so ever on its past . Omaeda being a Noble family is nothing but a Farce

But I do agree with the speculation Tessai actually may have been Urahara's Fuku-Taihan , coz he exhibits very high level Kido spells

Something in one of the omake chapters made me wonder about Oomeda's family. They're very, very snobby (except for his younger sister), and I'm certain I heard speculation that he only attained his rank due to his social status. Think about it. He's the only truly incompetent fukutaichou in Soul Society, based on what we've seen so far. I thought maybe he was from a minor noble house.

I'd forgotten how posh Renji thought Kira was when they first met.

Actually the small sword Kuukaku has strapped to her back in episode 25 and 92 (you see it from the back in 25?) looks an awful lot like the one Yoruichi wields in Soi Fong's flash back.

I think Kuukaku may have been talented enough to become a high ranking shinigami but her temper and attitude aren't suited for seireitei.

Sorry for the bump but I thought up a theory on how Kuukaku lost her arm and how the Shibas fell from grace.

is it possible that she used that kidou that Yama used? (Can't remember the name or number right now).
I'm thinking that Kuukaku was a Captain a little bit before TBTP started, which would explain why she is so good at kidou, and give her access to high level spells. Shinji did say that there had been a lot of new Captains promoted recently, I think he said that Division 3, 7, 10, 11, and 12 all lost their previous Captains recently. So Kuukaku could have been the Captain of 3, 7, or 10. (Somehow I just can't see her as a Kenpachi)

but why would that be a cause for their fall from grace?
it certainly could explain her losing an arm (though i'm more inclined to believe it was a fireworks accident), but being injured in battle doesn't strike me as something they would shun an entire family for. unless she used it against another shinigami or something, but then i imagine she would've got banished like urahara.

Because it was a forbidden spell. Tessai was going to get some sort of punishment himself for using forbidden spells. But I will agree that there is a chance it could be a fireworks accident.
That could also help support my theory though, since the spell did require the caster to sacrifice their own burnt flesh.
