LOL at panzerfan's koma. I think your pic is in need of a serious Level 5 Quarantine Spoiler Tag lest someone who's not read the visual novel or watched the Toei version stumbles in.

That's really nice. I couldn't do anything like that even if I tried.

Positioning I think can be improved. Mai seems a bit too far to the right. A bit of extra space between her and the edge can help.

yes, its quite nice... something is odd about Mai's angle though... her legs foreshorten off (she's got very athletic legs .. .not spindly) as if the figure were off-axis from the ground. If you could figure out some way to raise and tilt down the camera view with some tricks to the grass angle and the sword angle it'd probably work out.
Of course, I'm suggesting this with no freaking clue on how one might do that (all my experience is in 3-d space modeling for simulations).

edit: second attempt is better... maybe if you angled the sword toward the viewer that would eliminate my view angle mental bollix???? (maybe I should just shut up ) Its just that Mai looks as if she were photographed from above whereas the ground looks as if it were shot at a parallel angle.

Now the sword looks a little wierd, sorry about that.

As for how to position everything, it depends on what kind of message you want to bring out. If this is post-ending Mai, and the sword is in the ground because she threw it away, it'll be best to have Mai on the left side and the sword behind her. This give the message that the sword is in her past. Otherwise, if the sword is still in her life, you should have the two elements closer together. That would mean that she already has the sword, that she's in the middle of something. What you have now seems to give a mixed message, which might not be a good thing.

Why is Mai facing the sword? Is she going to pick it up? If you want a scene that's at the begining of her demon-hunt, young Mai will fit better into the scene. Then the distance will also make sense, as it looks like she's going to go pick it up and begin something.

@ Vexx...Is this better?I tried bringing the sword to the front and resized it abit.

@Meophist...It is Mai at the begining of her demon-hunt, unfortunatly I don't have any scans of little Mai .

The angles look better (the grass still looks a bit odd but I think its because it doesn't seem to shrink with distance from the camera). The only problem I see left is the sword-to-Mai ratio adjusted for distance ... the sword looks right it is right next to her and huge rather than closer to the "camera".
(some of that may be the grass not shrinking with distance)
The raw sword size should be about half her raw height but you may be able to play with it til it looks more natural, like for example, in 2-d speak... moving Mai further back in the shot (shrinkage) or pushing sword forward in the shot .... the light angles look okay.

Pure art composition opinion, ignore at leisure:
Meophist suggested a few things .... I'd offer the idea of putting Mai closer to the camera looking at the viewer and having the sword chunked into the ground farther back in the shot (as if she had just flung it away and then turned to look at you).

That we will

I think the positioning is much better. Now I think there's a little problem in that how both Mai and the sword seems to be leaning the same way. I think the sword should be more up-right because right now it looks like it was thrown away. If it isn't already, make the sword on top of everything else. It's hard to tell because of the transparency, but if it isn't, it might be the reason the sword looks so big. Vexx's advice is good regardless on this case.

It's coming together very well. My main complaint was that it looked like both Mai and the sword were "pushed" aside to the edges when it looked like they were supposed to be the focus. Now you're making a "circle" as your focus, having Mai on one side of the circle, the sword on the other, and the empty space representing the distance in the middle. I think it's well done. A picture is worth a thousand words. It's just a matter of getting those thousand words to say what you want.
