"Rick" (Hikaru) is not in Macross II.
It sounds like you may have seen Macross II the movie.
Here is a clip from it.

I have to admit, I loved Macross II's last stand as much as I do Gundam 00 Trailblazer. Despite my existing opinion of the characters and the plot, you simply don't see ship-to-ship combat like this often.

Episode 24 & 25 of Frontier still takes the cake, though.

Its not it. I wonder if someone made like a spin off of Robotech or something. Seriously its bugging me but Oh well...

I know it wasn't Macross II because the animation isn;t right. I specifically remember they were like teenagers...the "SDF-1" (i put in quotes because I don;t know 100% if they ever referred to if as that. Thy acted as if they grew up around the shift but didn't know why it was even there. I do remember the ship "turning on" at the end and firing.

I am just going crazy

I absolutely loved the mecha.
From the Marduk/Zentran hybrids to the VF-02.
Didn't care for the Metal Siren or VF-02J model much, but the VF-02S with SAP etc. was very well done in my humble opinion.

While I prefer Frontier (now that I've seen it), I noticed a few things from Frontier that probably were taken or influenced from Macross II.

The beam cannon on the top of the "big" Varja, reminds me of the beam cannon on the back of the VF-02.
Also, the VF-02 uses small "Bits" which are Ghost fighters, much in the same way that Ghost fighters were used with the VF-25 Electronic Warfare model.

Just a few thoughts.

EDIT:
To keep this on topic.

THIS is my favorite battle scene from all of the Macross series.
Nothing has yet to top it IMHO.

What makes it more horrifying though, is the fact that the Zentradi at that point were still just messin' around.

Imagine trying to burn a building down with fireworks because its fun.

I know right!
The Zentran were like: "We're just play'n, don't EVEN piss us off."
