Also has anyone noticed that the borders here are almost exactly the same as Gundam 00, I think the only difference is Russia and Africa being in the EU (though Africa seemed to be dominated by the AEU in Gundam). It would be nice if Sunrise Mech shows weren't dominated by Super Powers for a change. It also would have been nice if Brittania was closer to historical Britain (in actually owning Britain, hopefully they're still trying to reconquer it)
I am not sure if you could write a script without superpowers. It's how the world works after all.

And yes, they are still trying to reclaim Britain. That's what Suzaku's been doing the last year. And that where all the other Knights of the Round have been in season 1.

The director, Taniguchi, is anal retentive. Trust me, they've more or less been forced to put an unnecessary amount of thought into this story.

At the extreme end of the map sequence, we can see that Ceylan and all the Eastern part of India down to it's southern tip is part of China, that doesn't leave much to be independant, so either a small unseen chunk of western India is independant, or the whole lot is part of China, or presumably a vassal state (China's history has accomodated a lot of those).

@Strettger: Homeworld, one of the best games ever! (and one that could run on a crappy machine )

I haven't started on R2 yet, but I presume this revelation--that Britannia has been attempting to retake the isles with the Knights of the Round--comes there.

So what you're saying is even with 13 New Types in Super Robots (including Suzaku) Britannia hasn't been able to retake the home Isles? In that case, Britannia is even less of a super power than I thought.

OR, Britannia, like Britain of old, has devoted the lion's share of its attention and funding to developing a navy whereas the Europeans focused on land warfare, with the result that though the introduction of KMFs in recent has tipped the favor in Britannia's advantage somewhat, land warfare is still not their specialty.

Air power being equal.

What map were you looking at? I didn't see it reach to the tip at all, even if some of it's eastern territory is under the CF. That's exaggerating right there. Plus you didn't even include pakistan being a part of India before. And last I looked members of the vassal state don't usually go off working for their overlords competitors, get admitted into there universities and become one of their leading scientist and are then welcomed back with open arms when they return home, and Larkshata is famous for her work in the past so don't bring in they didn't know about it >_>

I have replayed Turn 2 intro several time in slow motion, and just before the screen switch from the map to Lelouch in World of C, you can see Ceylan and all of wath is to its north in the pale green of China.

Concerning Pakistan, you cannot see its southern part, but at least Afghanistan and maybe its northern part, on the boundary of the Arabia-Persia, is in the China color.

I haven't been investigating Rakshata's academical background, but to me she is quite a free electron, pledging allegiance to no one and only following the side that will amuse her the most. Plus in one of the sound episode I heard that she described her country as corrupt, wich would fit also for the bureaucracy of China.

Or maybe they just neglected to color an independant India..... (even if it is a little bigger than Iceland)

People travel all the time, just because someone's home land is controlled by another state does not mean they can't be from there.

Any way, my thought as to why they haven't gotten the British Isles back... fuel. What's the main explosive fuel in the CG world? Sakuradite, which is found in heavy deposits in Japan. Currently other than Area 11 we have no idea if there are any other deposits found around the world. My thought is that they didn't have enough fuel to peruse a long term campaign against the EU until they took over area 11.

Beyond that it could be said that the EU has frames that are at least the equivalent to the Sutherland to create a stalemate. It would also make sense why the Empire was so set on developing their military technologies. The mass produced Vincent will help break the stalemate once they're deployed in large numbers.

Also up until the recent ep I don't believe the Chinese have been actively at war with the Empire.

Concerning fuel, I wonder if instead of Sakuradite the Arabia-Persia is relying on oil instead, as they would have large supply of it, and the KMF we saw during the pacification of Area 18 had a diesel power vibe , but even if it where the case, they would probably be the only ones to do so, as Naqahdah technlogy seem infinitely superior.

I would assume Cal that they did invest heavily in their Navy.
Stop the French from entering North America in the Atlantic and they never need to fight the true might of the Grande Armee..... again.

What do ya mean for a change? The Big O (Only one city is shown to exist), Overman King Gainer (The major threat is a corporation), Dunbine (There are lots of small countries shown to exist in Byston Well) Patlabor TV (Takes place entirely in Japan as far as I know and is about policing), Brain Powerd (not really a battle between nations and more a symbolic battle between nature vs. nature) Betterman (Very hard to explain but a symbolic battle between evolution vs. decay in the life cycle) not to mention all the super robot shows where alien races are the enemy.

Plus a lot of mecha series are dominated by powerful factions fighting each other, it's just the way it seems to go. We're arguably lucky to even be getting mention of individual nations in show like Gundam 00 and Code Geass. I'll be honest, I was a little surprised to find countries being named in this series as I'm so used to stand in factions that have grown out of them. Really though, as Vallen says, it's more or less the way the world works.

Anybody have a guess as to why Britannia does not control Britain in the OP?

Because they aren't British? Aren't they based in America?

Because they were run out of Britain a long time ago by the Europeans.

You think Napoleon and Lelouch would have gotten along if they had met?

I can picture it now, an outdoor patio garden with tea and Scones having a enlightened discussion... of WORLD DOMINATION!!!

You know what's ironic? Napoleon's life has minor similarities to Suzaku's story.

His country Corsica was invaded by France, so Napoleon joined the French army, and raised through the ranks. That's the Suzaku part.

But then Napoleon took power, had many victories, and rule the nation that ruled his homeland. That's the part that Suzaku couldn't achieve; he can fight in the front lines like a demon, but a leader he isn't.

by ye haruhi. you got it.

It's the character of Napoleon, but split between suzuku and Lulu.

Suzuku represent his rise in the army, and lulu represent his strategic gift!

....maybe.

Here's some complete speculation somethings. I noticed that Russia is part of the EU. Now historically in anime Russia as always been grouped with China because of their communist ties.

From what we know of the Chinese Union they still have their Imperial monarchy in place. So we could probably assume that communism never took hold. From the looks of it, I wouldn't be surprised if socialism never rose to power in Russia either. With their tsar-ship (i have no idea what to call it) in place I believe they had more ties to Europe than to Asia.

Interestingly, having Russia be part of the EU gives them the ability to wage war on the Empire on 2 fronts.

Europe got its hands full defending on its Western borders, I don't think it can spare the men for an assault from the East side.
And is it really a good idea to launch an attack from Siberia of all places? I am sure Britannia didn't attack that side because they (smartly) feared the cold, but just because it is a good defensive platform doesn't make it a good place to start an offensive.
