Your desire to to play as a character you can identify with is not an inevitable consequence of your being a woman.
There are a lot of "cisgendered" men and women that don't feel that necessity and are perfectly comfortable with playing characters of the opposite sex.

The bottom line is that while nobody argues that this game isn't designed for you, to say that this game is designed for men would be an absolute bullshit.
All men cast especially in Japanese productions are a lot more common in female oriented media than otherwise. This game is blatantly pandering the female gamers, just not the lesbian ones.

Kratos isn't killing innocents but he is probably worse than the villains. I honestly never cared about his fate. In another example, while Dante from Devil May Cry is far from relatable, his objectives make the character more appealing. I don't know much about XV but it looks like the cast members are trying to stop a war there's at least something to care about them.

I don't necessarily identify with characters from my own sex. I remember playing FF12 and caring a lot more about Ashelia rather than Balthier.

Definitely, in fact Roger Ebert himself admitted that most films are not art. And we all know that most anime are just several hour long commercials for the manga, novels and games that they are based on.

But back to relating to characters, do people really have to relate to characters of their own gender? That is definitely not the case for the general audience, most people can relate to characters that are not even human, robots like Wall-E and even clownfish like Nemo, who is technically both male and female.

Which is why when it comes down to gender, it is usually very subjective and is a problem of the audience's psychology rather than the film or game itself.

Well I do like it when I can relate to a character in the game in some way. Just makes the stakes in the plot feel a bit higher and just like it when I care about what happens to the characters.

It is easier to relate to a character of the same gender, but I'm not going to dump a game because it has a female character. Fun games are fun games, and the characters (often) are still humans.

If this game was turn-based I probably wouldn't even be interested in the first place.

I'll probably buy it anyway but I'm with you. I wish there were more turn based RPGs.

If it's good I'll still buy it. But would like to see more turn-based games in the future.

Ya'll are missing the point entirely. The point is that the industry (that is, the video game industry) has this erroneous belief that games with female protagonists (or African-American protagonists of any sex) do not sell as well as those with (white) male protagonists.

This is about an inherent unfairness in the system--a developer may propose a game with a female protagonist and be rejected by publishers because they don't consider the character as marketable as a male protagonist. They find publishers who do agree to take the game to market to spend far less marketing dollars on these games.

The gaming industry operates on the fiction that all gamers are male. This is obviously not the case, but the publishers still stubbornly cling to this misconception.

I do not want a "female Mario." I am not, nor have I ever asked for, the protagonists of established and long-running franchises to be genderbent. I do not want to twist anyone's arm to force them to change their male heroes to female ones. That would be silly.

All I want is more choice--more games with female protagonists to be published and marketed fairly. So that when I pick a game to play, there's just as much chance that the main character will be either female or male. That currently is not happening--if you were to shove the names of 100 games from the past few years into a hat and randomly draw one out, you would have a vastly higher chance to draw a game with a male lead.

For someone like me, who has a hard time identifying with a male protagonist, it changes the dynamic of play entirely. I don't feel like an active participant when the hero is a man; I feel like a spectator watching the action, even though I (the player) am influencing said action. With a female protagonist, I become more immersed into the game, more engaged and involved. I derive much more enjoyment from a game with a female lead due to this greater level of immersion.

Again, I'm not trying to force anyone to change existing works, nor do I want every single game to have a "create your own hero" feature (though this works well enough in most RPGs).

All I'm asking for is equality--just as many games with female leads as those with male leads.

And no, I don't boycott books with male leads, because I don't have any trouble at all finding ones with female main characters. It's very easy to find a book with a female protagonist. It's not at all easy to find a game with one. Literature is fairly even-handed and thus I don't see any reason to send a message to the industry because they aren't excluding works with female leads (however, they do exclude works with lesbian main characters outside of the "special interest" category, but that's a whole other can o' worms).

@Synaesthetic:

Sorry, but I fail to see how your stance on gender and video games has anything to do with this thread. I don't know how the production process of FFXV went; maybe the devs originally intended to include more females but then opted for a more masculine cast, or maybe it was planned this way from the start. But the fact is that we don't know, and thus any possible connection between the male cast of FFXV and the trend of male characters in video games is speculation. And there's nothing wrong with that speculation to a degree, but turning it into a debate about how games need more female playable characters for multiple pages clearly deserves its own place outside of the FFXV thread. You might as well make a new thread about this or take it to VMs or PMs if you choose to carry it on.

I agree, it's already become a dead horse that will undoubtedly continue to be beaten without compromise.

On-Topic: How much of the original Versus plot + content do you think is being re-used for FFXV? I wonder if the eyes of Etro will still play a pivotal role despite no longer being in the Fabula Nova Crystalis series.

Consider that they change the name and somehow the world's setting doesn't look anything like it belongs to Fabula Nova Crystalis series, I think there won't be any left of the plot or content from their original idea.

Well, not that I'm complaining. I've always been wanting something like FFVIII's world for awhile.

Guys, we already have a thread about female gamers, please stay focused on discussing the game.

Any post that continues with this, will be deleted.

Back to the topic though, I actually prefer that action based FF such as this and FF Type zero stays as gaiden title instead of numbered title, but after seeing the screenshot, I don't care anymore and just hope it come out soon I just wonder how they will handle summon in this game or whether the summons will stay only as enemies. Oh, and of course, what kind of Gilgamesh and Cid incarnation we're gonna get in the game

There's a time and place for (pseudo?) turn based menu driven RPGs. That's why I hope Dragon Age 3 will be that, as I loved the tactical aspects of the original, and being pseudo turn based will lend most to that kind of gameplay.

FF15? I can dig they want it to be more real time, since they're focusing on how cool the battles can be with Noct's sword switching/flashy attack animation/aerial combat etc.

As long as you have a party of three members, I'll buy an RPG. But I tend to stay away from monogender parties because those tend not to have me able to ship ANYTHING. FF15 is already different with it already playing the star-crossed lovers trope (and maybe even the osananajimi trope too XD) with Stella and Noctis, so even if it was monogender party I'll probably still buy it. But if they have confirmation Stella is playable? Consider it already pre-ordered and played day one. XD

I wonder if the person with the Assassin's Creed costume is also a party member. I heard it's actually a girl. Then there is also a character from an early Versus trailer who look like the female version of Kain Highwind.
