DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disk, which should give some indication. You can burn anything at all to a DVD, as well as being able to transcode pc video formats such as mpeg or avi to DVD video, with the correct program (such as Nero VisionExpress.)
You burn a DVD in exactly the same way as a CD, except you need to specify that it's a DVD in the program you use for burning (in Nero, the little dropdown on the top left of the wizard lets you switch between CD and DVD.) Of course, you also need a DVD burner; a standard CD writer pretty obviously isn't going to work. You can pick up decent burners dirt cheap nowadays if you don't already have one.
