I had the same question one month ago and the answer is simple.

1. The upstream wouldn't let them because water flows towards the same current in this world, making traveling a linear, one-way route (7 routes actually but with the same direction).

2. Without proper experience and extra crew members, no crew stands a chance against the elites of the Navy and Pirate world, so they need to take the long way to gain levels and extra powers first.

Practically, the world of One Piece is like a standart rpg world, where the route is set in linear travel and every new area you travel has stronger opponents that help you to level up before moving on to the next.

Grandline goes around world horizonally on equator.

Redline goes around world vertically through polars of the world (south/north).

If you go around world using Grand Line you have to go through Red Line twice.

Because mountain currents that allows you to cross Red Line goes only towards East.

Basically when Strawhats entered to Grand Line in begin they could only follow current towards east.

When they faced Red Line's line in Shabondy you can travel through in both directions though you have to go under it.

Sooo... Luffy got a strap for his hat, so it doesn't fall off while he fights. Ok... so what about his sandals?

In the anime, do they ever switch to a new artist? Because looking at some old and newer scenes, some characters' faces seem to be constructed differently than they were. This kinda bothers me, because I don't like it when faces just change.

1st spoiler: Zoro from Mr 1 fight
2nd: Face from a later on

Spoiler:

There are many animators in One Piece anime, each with own distuingished style. Some have very high quality art, while some sacrifice art to compensate smoother animation.

Also Oda's style has changed during manga and animators base their work on current manga styles. However here are some of animators, I am quoting someone else post;

These are from AP forums and I am just copy/pasting.

Quote:
Eisaku Inoue: He's the head animator. Out of all the directors, he comes the closest to Oda's style. Things to look out for are detailed shading, well-endowed women, Zoro having puny thin arms, and genral awesome action. Some of his stuff: episodes 2, 119, 126, 312, 336, 367, Movies 2,7,8.

Katsumi Ishizuka: His work can be spotted from a mile away by the characters' really thick nose shadows. His episodes are usually very sharp, and detailed, with A-grade action sequences. Some of his stuff: episodes 290, 298, 309, 353.

Naoki Tate: Art style is radically different from the others, as it's similar to Movie 6, though not quite as refined. Expect expressive character designs, fluid action sequences, and generally very solid episodes. Some of his stuff: episodes 233, 289, 304, 311, 369, Movie 9.

Kazuya Hisada: His art style is similar to Ishizuka's, right down to the thick nose shadows. His art generally tends to fluctuate between good and fair, and he's prone to having odd looking faces when displaying them at an angle. Some of his stuff: ALL the openings since at least Kokoro no Chizu; same with the endings, as well as all of the new eyecatches, episodes 338, 348, 356, 366.
and then some other ones

Masayuki Fujita: What I find the most noticeable about his style is how he draws Nami and Robin. Nami's face and eyes are a bit more curved, rather than round. The result is that she looks a lot more ''anime-ish'', if you will. Robin's eyes are drawn slightly larger than usual, making her look noticeably younger. His art is generally okay, though I do remember a particularly ugly episode at the beginning of Thriller Bark that only Robin came through unscathed. His action scenes are average, but his most recent work, Nightmare Luffy vs. Odz, was above and beyond any of his previous work this arc. Some of his stuff: episodes 330, 339, 358, 365, 372. He may be a new addition to the show, because I don't see any episodes listed by him before 330.

Kenji YokoyamaThis fellow definitely belongs to the lower tier. His character designs are rather flat, with very thin lines. He seems to usually give Zoro a very wide forehead. When his characters are viewed from the side, they often have rather prominent jaws. His action scenes aren't that impressive. Some of his stuff: episodes 305, 327, 350, 354, 368.
Full list of all animators:

Eisaku Inoue (2, 9, 14, 19, 26, 33, 41, 48, 72, 79, 86, 93, 99, 104, 110, 119, 126, 168, 175, 220, 237, 244, 284, 312, 325, 336, 357, 367, Movies 2,7,8)

Yukari Kobayashi (302)
Yuki Kinoshita
Yuuji Hakamada (5, 11, 17, 24)
Yuuji Kondou

Personally I hate Tate's work most, his animation is very fluid but his art is very paper like and ugly.

I like Inoues work most but its rare delicasy

With Mihawk the answer is obvious. He cut the sea in half and walked on the bottom of the ocean until he reached the East Blue. Krieg probably just had luck.

And answer number 2 should be obvious. HAKI. It's the answer to everything.

Or just plain willpower (as Sengoku stated himself)?

Its a fucking manga we're talking about, not everything has to be logical.

How the hell can a person's nose be twice the length of the rest of his head?

Are you stupid?

Hey i got a probably annoying question since it might've been asked a million times.

I've been watching the anime only so far. Which means i've read already a couple things here in the Q&A which i have never heared of before. Fortunatly i am interested in the manga i've seen up to episode 414 where Luffy is on the island of the Amazones. Right now he used some sort of kings haki. Meanwhile all the weaklings ( i suppose) fainted.

Now... explaining all that i have all of a sudden more questions ...but first off all..with what chapter do i start to make sure i havent missed or skipped anything from the manga?

Secondly... the impressive force Luffy used on all the females was that the exact same force which Shanks used on Whitebeard's ship?? Was that the same thing? He entered Whitebeards ship and all the weaker guys fainted.

Last...question is... only... is Luffy's crew going to expand like the other big pirates who have a crew of 20-50 men or is it going to remain the small crew of Robin, Zorro, Ussopp, Franky, Chopper, Nami, Sanji and Brook?

I think anime doesn't skip anything from the manga. I am not sure if there are any changes, but if there are, they shouldn't be major changes.

The same thing. Luffy's was a burst, Shanks' was a leakage.

At most a few more additions(1 or 2), and that is it.

No it wasn't. Luffy Force that Luffy used was called Haki, Luffy has a special type of Haki called Haoushoku Haki (The King's Disposition), Shanks doesn't have this type of Haki (at least it wasn't stated in the manga).

Who knows, from what we see, all the Yonkou have crews that are much larger than Luffy's.

I have a question about teh skypiea arc. Cause i recently watched an ep of it and was wondering..

Gan Fall was trying to negotiate with Wiper, and it didn't work. But then, out of nowhere, Gan Fall says "I'm very fond of pumpkin juice". And Wiper gets angry and goes after Gan Fall. Why did Gan Fall say that? And why did Wiper attack?

(Ep 168)

EDIT: Also, has anyone confirmed that Luffy can ride bikes? Because on one of the endings, it looks like he is, but it turns out to be a piece of exercise equipment.

Hi, I used to watch the dub version of One Piece many years ago, and the last episode i remember watching was the one where the crew started fighting those fish pirates I think their leader had like a saw for his nose or something. Its one of those very early episodes, and so I was wondering if anyone can tell me which ep that was so I can start from watching there. I'd also like to know which episodes are filler so I can avoid then. I hate fillers

Thanks

If you mean when the entire crew goes to fight Arlong, episode 37. I'm not sure, but the end of 36 might be the epic scene that makes you want to watch the fight.
