I'm kinda confused about the relationship of each characters now.
The show is very... cryptic, and all the conversations are nothing but symbolic and cryptic as hell.

The only apparant progress the episode made were:
1. Usami's death
2. Mysterious Man shown in the photo with Kiriko is spotted at the cult group, by none other than Kiriko herself.

Usami blackmails Kumashiro with... extremely cryptic tape messages, that makes absolutely no sense to us audiences. But who shows up at the meeting place is the Skull Man, and kills Usami with his gun. Tetsuro and Reina also is there, and acknowledges his death.

From the Shingyouji brothers' reaction, I guess this "gun using Skull Man" is the real one... but if that's the case, everything becomes even more cryptic.

Now I have no idea what the hell is going on in this city.
Usami did, however, in his cryptic messages mention that the "Skull" will punish those who doesn't obey the voice of God. How much of Skull Man he was aware, is totally lost at this point.

I hate it when stories try to make itself as mysterious as possible by simply talking in gibberish.
C'mon guys, speak in some coherent human language for god's sake.

Hopefully, they'll reveal more to us next episode... in a bit more plainer language.

I actually think their talks are not completely gibberish. Usami obviously wants to do what the guy in the old movie wanted to do. And it apparently have something religious going on. And when something is related to religion, it's more liekly to come out like gibberish

For the gun-wielding Skullman, I think I can actually understand it

If Skullman is really the Kagura guy who wants revenge, it's not unusual for him to not just kill mutants, but also assassinate those related to the Otomo company. So killing members of the Otomo company, and trying to kill the journalist who has a close tie to the head of the Otomo company, is quite logical. From what we have seen so far, the Skullman is really not a good guy, he can kill innocent people in cold blood for his revenge, maybe those special blades are reserved for mutants while he kill normal humans with a gun.

Nope, after episode 5 everything is clear as daylight now about the gun using Skull Man

the gun using Skull Man IS Usami, he knows the Shingyouji dude, that's why he has the Skull Man costume. In this episode he goes to meet the real Skull Man intending to kill the Skull Man, but when he is about to draw his gun, he sees the real Skull Man with HIS gun, that is when he realizes that his gun has been switched (to a iron wrench as later shown), and he is killed by his own gun in the real Skull Man's hand.

So everything about the gun using Skull Man is cleared up.

I don't think it was a joke.

Usami may have been a leader in the church ( a reference to that movie) who got upset over what they were doing and was trying to take them down using Skull Man. The 2 mutants were also probably members of the church. I think that because Usami referred to the male mutant as a servant and that mutant wanted to hear the voice of god. Usami's mother was also in a nursing home supported by the church.

It may also be that the real Skull Man is trying to work his way up the church hierachy to get at them too and that's how Usami found out about him. He was hintng about that in the movie theater.

personally, I still have my doubts about the gun-wielding Skullman, as in ep4

the gun-wielding Skullman is hinted to have great agility moving on the outside of the train car and Skullman-ish ability at controlling lights in the train and suddenly appear at the back of his target. If he is indeed Usami, he has too much exceptional combat ability IMO.

I admit I was as confused as Aohige after watching episode 5. My reason for the confusion was that how the dialogues in the movie were being interrupted, but it turns out the interruption was very important to follow the plot point. Thanks Sshock2. I also understand now by the question asked by one of the accomplice as to why the two accomplice were helping the Skullman-impostor, Usami, and later, have betrayed him...

"The voice of God... Is it not possible for me to hear it?" and Usami's reply was, "The Voice of God is the gospel of the chosen. A servant like you hasn't the right to hear it."

In other words, what ever Usami says, goes. Those two just need to follow. Obviously, the accomplice didn't approve most of the killings Usami undertook, and it was time to cut loose.

My remaining confusion is that I still don't clearly grasp the significance of the Nietzche reference other than the usage of those famous words, "God is dead."

I'm loving this series!

One thing I hear a lot about Nietzche is the becoming an over-man who is master of oneself. I haven't actually read any of his stuff so I don't know more than that.

that show is quite intriging, i dont think i ll drop it until we get more info, so far it s been good, a nice investigation with character being removed if they screwup.

Up to date (5) on the episodes so far, and so far I'm very interested of the series. Looks like I'll be rewatching it a few times at a later date to understand all the little hints and references .

So, now we have another Skull Man? Is he the real deal, or another imposter? I'm leaning towards the latter, since he doesn't look anything like the character from the OP when the mask splits.

I had a little "HOLY CRAP" moment with the picture of the scientists :O

and The ending... was that Maya? This group seems connected with the mutants quite a bit, since they seem to have the same pendants, and I noticed these guys have the same masks as those "grunts" (for lack of a better name for them) from the Prologue

This could still turn out like the manga, though I hope for a different ending. The ED animation definitely hints at main characters dying.

I vote for the current Skull Man to be an imposter who knocked off the mayor because of that Kagura mess. There was music playing in the background. I bet that was a mental conditioning trigger. Plus the 2 mutant partners were missing and he's using more weapons (1 shotgun and a Mausser).

Even more ominous is that the Church is possibly a front for the pharmaceutical company manufacturing mutant bio-weapons.

I wonder if the current version of Skull Man is Kagura's son.

This is definitely a complicated title.

The Shotgun-Skull is most likely the same man as Kiriko's-Photo-Man. I didn't pause the frame to make sure, but then again, nearly everyone with that hairstyle looks the same in this series.

Oh yeah, I thought that they were the same too, but we don't have an ID on him so that's why I was thinking Kagura's son. Isn't it strange that Hayato is an orphan before his adoptive father was killed?

But isn't it strange that Kiriko started busting out those moves?
