Dual Blue-Ray/HD DVD player for computer?

It is in the news that samsung is going to put out dual Blue-ray/HD dvd player (is it called DVD-Rom?) for computers. The price is going to be like $1500 USD. What do you guys think? Is this going to prolong the battle for the next generation dvd, if getting more choice is better, or nothing is going to change? Pros and cons? Is there any other company going to join samsung and put out more dual format dvd players?

Most korean companies will make the same move.
For example LG is going to show a hddvd/bluray player at the CES 2007.

If that unit is going to be $1500 it's probably more cost effective to buy the drives separately. A Blu Ray drive (for PC) can be found for about $600 on Newegg.com and while I couldn't find a HD-DVD drive yet, it's probably going to be the same or cheaper.

When buying these drives you should check if they're ready to play movies, as some of these drives will only work on data (they're burners) and not video discs.

Btw, I noticed some Media Center PC-like device on the Wikipedia pages for Blu Ray and HD-DVD which can already play both, as it has two drive bays.

Buy the XBox 360 HD-DVD drive
Really, it's not as expensive as other consumer solutions and a Windows XP driver is available (*not officially*)

The price will drop in a few years. I mean , BlueRay is seriously overrated. They should use mini Hard Disks or something , since Bluray dvds are very sensitive and expensive.

That's a good idea. For $200 it's a really cheap option...

Math time:
XBox 360 + HD-DVD = $600
PS3 = $600
$600 + $600 = $1,200
$1,500 - $1,200 = $300

So, for three hundred dollars less, I can get two separated HiDef players and two gaming systems? I smell fail coming from Samsung

Toshiba Qosmio or something (note book) burns HD DVDs for sure

40 € for a 50GB disc, 25€ for a 25GB disc... not cheap >_<
And those damn DVD-R DL keep being expensive as well T_T... Go figure why one bought a Sony DVD DL writer.

LG are charging USD 1200 for their combo player
(and same for their computer drive GGW-H10,
which also can burn BD-R/E, DVD-/+R and cdr data, but no Hddvd)
However not sure if both, samsung and LG player, will feature BD-J or iHD compatibility.
At the moment i don't see any use for a read only drive for pcs,
unless the bluray and hddvd recorders and their media are much more affordable.

Btw PS3, it is atm the only player that supports BD-J.
