Speed Grapher
Gungrave (More towards drama than action)
Erementar Gerad (Not very good animation and shounen, but i though action was good and story was good, at least to me)
Utawarerumono (War fighting scenes, and one of my personal favorite)
Fate/stay night (At least very good for story and action, loved it personally)

Soukou no strain .. just ended. 13 episodes. Mecha BG, but story telling concentrated on the struggle on the main character.

Dunno if you've watched Cowboy Bebop .. Also get Samurai Champloo with the same Author. Both 26 episodes. Excellent story.

Death Note, currently ongoing. Detective with a flash of shinigami inserted.

Rozen Maiden, dont let those dolls fools you, underneath it is a very solid captivating story. 2 seasons and 2 episodes OVA.

Saiunkoku Monogatari . Ancient China BG... currently ongoing, 2nd season announced.

Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto. Japanese historical setting with a flash of mystical stuff thrown in. Currently ongoing.

Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho. New ongoing, currently 4th episodes, subbed up to episodes 2.

On lighter stuff, Shinigami no ballad comes to mind, 6 episodes. Very sweet tale of a shinigami girl.

Oh yea, 2nd Utawarerumono suggestion.

Black Lagoon both seasons. The bestest pure action anime in recent memory IMHO.

Juuni Kokki - has an extremely good story as well as great animation.
Gankutsuou - such an awesome and vengeful story, however there are a few really gay looking scenes (literally). The art and animation is quite different from all other animes, at first it might be weird to get used to, but you will eventually come to like it.
Gantz - good storyline and the fighting scenes are pretty goddamn awesome.
Tenjho Tenge - a good shounen to start out with. This also has awesome fighting scenes.

Try watching Fate/Stay Night (licensed) and Shakugan no Shana (licensed). They both have good action/romance/fantasy thing going on. Also, to add another, try also Trinity Blood (licensed)

Pumpkin Scissors, Busou Renkin, and Nodame Cantabile are my current favorites, and all are currently ongoing. Ghost Hunt is also good.
