Today, the kind of relationship you see in Marimite just doesn't exist, an anime like "high school girls" is actually closer to reality.

If you want to know if it's seen as something acceptable for teenage girls to be really close, the answer is yes, as long as the relationship remains platonic. Let's just say that kids have room to experiment.

Edit:

To try to get the conversation back on topic, it's interesting to see how Class S, a genre of shoujo aimed exclusively at females, have become popular with males, particularly Otaku. It may have something to do with the relationships being pure and innocent, something you see in every moe show today. Anime with a cast composed only of females that appear to be almost completely asexual is becoming more and more common.

I'm not hugely surprised that casts are moving to being all girl... let's face it, most otaku are more interested in the girls anyway, so this is just the logical end game.

Some will argue that most people want a character they can relate too... I'll just say that my life is too boring for me to relate to most anime protagonists. The one I probably come closest to relating to is EF's Renji Asou, only with less male moe and more l33t technical skills. (YES I'M A DWEEB. CAN IT.)
