How to pause and play animated gifs

Please do pardon me if I'm posting in the wrong section, and if I did, would the mods please move it to the proper section? Thanks.

Occasionally I would come across some interesting animated gifs, be they anime- or non-anime related, and I would sometimes like to examine each frame more closely.

(An example is this animated historical map of Australia from Wikipedia

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Im...a_history2.gif)

As you can see from this example, the speed of the animation is just too fast for my reading speed. But unlike flash, I just don't know how to pause these damn pictures. So anyone here have any ideas how I can do it on Firefox/IE without having to download anything?

ImageReady, actually. Unless Adobe has more recently combined the two.

With ImageReady, you can see each frame on its own. You would also be able to modify how much time is spent on each frame, if you wanted to edit the file that way.

I don't know of an easier way to dissect an animated GIF. There's probably some free software around that could do it, but I'm not familiar with any.

You don't actually need ImageReady if all you want is to pause the gif (or fast forward/backward).
Just open the gif file in Media Player Classic and treat it like a video file.
Heck, even Windows Media Player can view it, though the controls seem to be a bit screwy.

Yes, that's exactly what I was asking for. I'm not interesting in downloading any fancy stuff, I just want to view the bloody gif frame by frame at my own pace. Thanks a million man.
