How to add picture in anime episode?

I just start interesting about fansubbing. Thanks to this forum at least I can make subtitle and a simple karaoke effect. ^ ^

But I felt curious when I watched an anime which started with an introduce picture before the show really started.

An example is that [Ayako]Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny, [Ayako]Murder Princess and almost all Lunar released.

How can they do it? Which tool to be used?

Avisynth, probably. If you combine the "ImageReader" function with concatentation, adding frames from still images is easy.

I don't exactly see the idea but I will try gather more information about Avisynth.

Thanks for your reply.

For example:
Code:
ImageSource("C:\images\picture.png", start=0, end=399, fps=23.976)
Would produce a video out of the image picture.png from C:\images\ starting from frame 0 to frame 399, so 400 frames at 23.976 frames per second (so roughly a 16 second long section). Fairly simple, ne?

Remember to delay the audio when muxing, too.

or just encode the audio with the video script. don't forget to add silence to the picture so you don't need to kill the video's sound.

That doesn't work if you're encoding with x264, since it doesn't do sound. You can, however, do something like below, open the .avs in VirtualDub and save the resulting WAV. Which still probably is more work than just delaying the audio, but hey, there's more than one way to kill a cat...

Code:
a = avisource("1.avi")
b = imagesource("2.png", end=300, fps=a.framerate()).converttoyv12()

audiodub(b, blankclip(b)) ++ a
Yet another way to do it is by abusing mkvmerge's append function, but then probably need to generate silent audio and then encode it with settings identical to the existing audio stream.

In the end, you probably are best off by just appending the video in Avisynth and delaying the audio in the muxing step. Except if your video is VFR, because then you need to either shift the timecodes, or append the video in mkvmerge. Oh, who am I kidding. Do it whichever way you want, as long as it works. Just don't append AVI segments in Virtualdub, because that doesn't synch the audio. :V

well, that's exactly what I meant because, well, I don't really trust something called audio delaying (and don't forget frame to miliseconds conversion that needs to be done).
and in vfr, i still prefer manually editing the timecode than using append function

What's so hard about it? The picture you add can be any fps you want. You can even make it only one frame and set the framerate to some smallish fraction. Just delay the audio by number of frames * 1/framerate, big deal. Even if it's off by something ridiculous like 100ms, pretty much noone will ever notice.
