Critic-proof
Last year, I reviewed a series of fanfics that were submitted for a contest, and I got seriously criticised for, well, criticising. It all unfolds here.
I was later told by the website owner not to post reviews of fanfics on his site, and when I told him that he should review them himself then, he was all, "Just because it's on my site doesn't mean it requires a review." Your thoughts? |

You're getting your panties in a twist over a fanfic?
Sounds like you've got an axe to grind What happened? you didn't win? on a similar note: What the hell is it about? What's the point? and: Where's my coffee? ...the links you provided made me feel like my first day in 4chan those moments in life where "WTF?'s" prevail over common sense Where's the part where those tentacle aliens come in and rape half the popular cast? like what happens in most fanfics that do not have enough boy-love

Um... I don't think you understand at all.
The deal is that I wrote my thoughts on a bunch of fanfics submitted for a contest at some site on my blog, and some people complained that I shouldn't have reviewed them because I didn't enter the contest (or that the fic writers are just kids). In a nutshell, I'm not complaining about the fic. I'm complaining about not being able to complain. (For that matter, my dad also criticises me whenever I make any kind of criticism.) I'm asking if you think that the complainers have a good point about not letting me complain. |

I think complaints have their place, as long as people are not complaining for the sake of complaining (because then it just becomes annoying). It sounds to me that you were perfectly all right with your complaints... And it's ironic that your dad criticises you whenever you make any kind of criticism...

...and that's what makes American/British writing horrible. Big shot protectors don't like seeing kids get hurt to any degree, so they prevent any sort of criticism from happening. Kids don't grow, and up to when they're 16-18 we still see crappy writing as if they're trying to learn English as a second language.
People need thicker skins before they all get desensitized from praising. |

I fail to see why their opinion bothered you; it's not like their views on you or your work should actually impact you. You are not employed by them, and they're hiding behind the monitor - everyone can say whatever they want behind the monitor.
The only opinion in the world that really matters is yours. Sure, you may accept others' opinions to maintain peace or achieve a goal, but it's just THEIR words and THEIR opinions. They don't really matter. After all, when will you deal with those people again? Probably not that much; whereas you have to deal with yourself every day.
