I need a suggestion for a friend. He likes anime, but despises most shonen-esque main characters. His favorite anime of all time are Cowboy BeBop(mostly because of Spike), and Kenshin(hates the main character, but loves the supporting cast).

So I need a good series that avoids the "I will be the best ______ ever!" pitfall.

Chrno Crusade isnt very shonen-esque.

The main character is female, and a nun. There seems to be no 'being the best' cliched dream involved, and there is a fair amount of action.

Its currently aired upto ep 7, which is awaiting fansubbage

Gunslinger Girl is another anime you might like to show him, it has action, but is somewhat more thoughtful about it.

Two of my alltime favorite animes are Bomberman Jetters and Get backers, both of which are on animesuki. Also if he liked cowboy bebop, why not try trigun(licensed), I found it to very somewhat similar the bebop and in my opinion just as good.

The "cute innocent looking girl with big breasts and guns" is a classic stereotype you will find in shônen anime. Anyway that's not the point here

Depends on the genre really, but in no particular order :
- Noir (dark)
- Love Hina (humour)
- Saikano (drama)
- Planetes (SF)
- FLCL (mind trip)
- Ghibli films ...

Guess you can't show him GTO, as Onizuka strives to be the best teacher ever

Any Miyazaki film. I've never met a single person that could badmouth spirted away.
