They might not have wanted the oil for themselves, but just to gain control of it. To make sure it didn't go to, say, China, for relatively cheap.

In 50 years? We'll have much better entertainment technology - 3D imagery, virtual reality, AI... Most of which will be used for porn.

Of course, how could we possibly forget about the advancement in the technology if porn, it is truely a cold day when there is no more porn left in the world .

Let's forget about politics for a while and try to think something else better.

Most people thought that we will extinct 50 years from now but I don't think so.I believe we living the at the very early stage of new era.Our universe is the next oddyssey.Perhaps next decade we send robots to an alien world to see aliens.I also don't care about overpopulation because we will colonize our nearest neighbours such as Moon or Mars.We also might have technologies to build artificial colonies like we saw in Gundam multiverse. The main reason why most people prefer to accept the idea of "doomsday at near future" is they refuse to leave their holy places behind.I'm not an atheist and I do believe in doomsday.I just thought our doomsday is not as fast as we thought. It was a process might take centuries even millenias.

I know most people here won't believe it and I'm free to see their own opinions here.

As Scot Adams says, the holodeck will be the demise of mankind. No one will ever come out of one.

It would be intersting to see one live in action, though. I would probably be the same, I probably wouldn't want to come out too. Ultimate human desire is a dangerous prize to grant.

night, night it's 4am now.

People will come out when it starts smelling too much of various bodily fluids.

Hopefully by then it'll be robots who do the cleaning.

I'm not sure how the holographics would work. It might be possible, but definitely not within the next 50 years. Maybe within the next 100 or so. I wouldn't get your hopes up if I were you.

The question is why it has to be holographic to begin with. The world as we see it exists only in our brain, thus according emulation and stimulation of said brain can provide a holodeck like experience. (I assume it is far easier to develop universal neuronal interfaces than simulating space, gravity or mechanical forces with the means of pure energy - afaik the principle of how a holodeck does work).

You're joking, right? The middle east is a very troubled place right now, and has the attention of the entire world.

Hey, now that's an idea. Sounds a lot easier than trying to project light through mediums and that that crap... that stuff's way to hard, and i bet such a technology would be expensive and impractical. Very awesome, but impractical.

The US will follow the route of Rome. US foreign policy will emphasize "offensive defense" to defend the "homeland" against perceived terrorist threats. In practical terms this will produce a series of quick, bloody preemptive invasions, followed by costly, long-term occupations. Rising costs of maintaining a professional, technologically superior military will cripple the US economy. However, the government will not respond by adjusting taxes or spending. Escalating military costs and Social Security payments to Baby Boomers will create a government debt crisis.

Meanwhile, Disney and Pixar will continue to be dominant players in the entertainment industry, the only industry in which America maintains a competitive advantage. By 2030, Disney, Pixar, Apple Computer, Exxon, and AT&T have merged to become the world's largest corporation. In the year 2043, the Pixney Company negotiates a debt swap and the US government becomes a wholy owned subsidiary. By 2057, Washington, DC is revitalized as Americaland, the world's third most popular theme park.

Personally, I don't believe it. Nasa only aims to send the first man to Mars by 2050. This is not even for the sake of colonizing, but simply to study the geological past of Mars.

Now, we already know our solar system is void from intelligent life apart from earth. The next nearest star system is Alpha Centauri. Of which, Proxima Centauri, the nearest to earth as of now, stands at 4.22 light years away. This is about 4 x 10^13 km away, which means that even with a 50 years journey we would need to travel at an average speed of 9 x 10^6 km/hr or something.

Not to mention that Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star, where life would most probably not exist.

Colonization of planets within the solar system is impractical, due to the resource constraints, and colonization of planets outside the solar system is a little far-fetched =D.

Well, people want the real thing for one... While holograms may be expensive, people may feel cheated leaving their conscience in the hands of a machine.

For two, imagine the ethical and religious implications of these brainstimulation thingies. (what should I call them xP)
What can you call direct brain manipulation?... It's kind of dehumanizing to some extent, restricting the right to freedom of thought. People may feel insecure, I guess.

Well, if you consider evolution to a robotic existence a positive future... ...

Here's something pretty far-fetched, but since the world as we see it only exists in our brain, (as by Jinto) and that it *may be possible to stimulate reality by tapping onto brain activity or what not, why not simply just connect every other human being through this reality? This is a very possible consequence of brain tapping, I suppose.

Even worse, I mean, better, if we are able to replicate these brain activities and store them into computers or something, it could possibly mean developing conscience without the biological burden! The secret to immortality! Kyaa!~

In other words, matrix! o_o
