Fair enough, but I didn't mean religion per se, could be anything really, anything to place one's hopes in. Like for an archetypical child it's a teddy most commonly.

Eh, well, chances are I'm wrong in some case or other, but so is everyone when it comes to topics such as religion.

I was an atheist when I was a child, regardless of how much christian belief half of my family tried forcing onto me, while the other half tried getting me to believe in Judaism. However as I grew older and my mind started growing, I eventually realized I accepted the possibility of God without really believing it.

In that sense, I became a nihilist. I still am to this day, only I'm much more knowledgeable and can actually call myself someone who truly doesn't believe in existence.

Agreed.

I mean, I was originally raised christian, and was taught that mormons (just as an example) were a bunch of "blaspheming dunderheads"...but in reality, they're some of the nicest people I know. Seriously, how can you have a religion base an entire group of people? I mean, yeah, I've had the Book of Mormon shoved in my face many times, but I just laugh and hand it back. We're all still good friends. And to add to the atheist point-of-view: my cousin is atheist and he's not an "asshole who's just trying to be different" he just doesn't believe/care. So please, next time, rationalize before you insight a cyber-holy war up in here. Even the first post tells you not to.

Peace,
Takeru

Sturgeon's Law: "Ninety percent of everything is crap." That includes people.

It's really just a given. If you said that statement about Christians to my face, then as a Christian I could only say "Truer words have never been spoken."

Just more evidence for the idea that you can't judge any thing, idea or institution by the majority of its followers.

My point was not to insult any group. My point was that generalizations are usually worthless for judging anything.

I'm Roman Catholic, but there are times I question my own religion. Either way, I'm very open to anything, just don't go insulting cuz criticism and insulting are two separate actions.

Just remember that certain segments of many religions view *any* discussion as heresy or a mortal insult. Just read about another cartoonist who had to go under police protection because of wingnut "righteous" death sentences placed on him. It is unfortunate that these people are so insecure in their beliefs that they must silence others. They're a stain on whatever merits the religion they claim to defend has. (wanders off muttering about the "marketplace of ideas")

Ho-hum. Let's see....

I'm a Muslim, from the Sunni branch, (mostly) following the Shafi'e madhab. If none of these words make sense to you, then all of your opinion on the Middle East be it sociological or political is automatically null and void in my eyes.

Speaking of which, it's Ramadhan here, so I'm supposed to be extra nice to people *groan*

I'm a muslim myself, but I dont get it when people say 'Oh no swearing this month', or 'I should be good to people this month' Always gets to me. And what should you do for the other months?? Drink, to drugs etc etc.

I believe in general that religion is bad. The idea of religion is good, brings community together. But in doing that it also splits people apart. I think that religion is a barrier between humans, and it is used as an excuse to do terrible things.

Also things like fasting & praying dont make you a good muslim. Mostly, the people who pray 5 times a day are the worst people on earth. You simply cannot pray, and then go back to sinning like it was nothing. The world is in shatters right now.

I just believe that, regardless of how incredibly screwed my ethical system is, Ramadhan is a month-long period worthy of respect. I mean, I don't turn angel overnight, but nevertheless I do believe that even though if you're a hard-drinkin', hard-partyin' social wreck the least you can do is to tone it down.

Sort of how you don't crack bad jokes during someone's funeral.

I can assure you, when the Loyalists are throwing Molotov cocktails into Catholic churches, they're not thinking "transubstantiation my arse!"

I don't follow a religion, but am interested in the themes shown in the doctrines. Also, religious ideas (as opposed to the dogmatic beliefs laid down by organised religions) share a fluid boundary with secular ideas. In the words of Carl Jung:

"A man may be convinced in all good faith that he has no religious ideas, but no one can fall so fary away from humanity that he no longer has any dominating représentation collective. His very materialism, atheism, communism, socialism, liberalism, intellectualism, existentialism, or what not, testifies against his innocence. Somewhere or the other, overtly or covertly, he is possessed by a supraordinate idea."

In all honesty I'm a hypocrite but I prefer relativist. I was recently baptized and attend Roman Catholic mass under the influence of my wife. I can't say that I'm sure of what I actually believe in at the moment.

Regardless, high school cheerleaders are living proof that God is real.

I'm Catholic-ish. I mean, I follow the be kind to your neighbor thing, but I'm not too clear in my belief in the afterlife.
