How to clone a HDD

I know the problems involved, but I want to give this a try as I really don' want to reinstall 40apps.

Basically I can get a 1tb SATA HDD for about $240USD. Now my problem is I'm out of SATA ports, my PCI slots are taken up so I can't use a PCI slot controller card(Micro ATX board) I was thinking of pulling out the 400gig drive and putting that in a external enclosure instead as I can't seem to find an external enclosure that will take a 1tb drive. (if there is one I'd like to know)

But any alternatives are appreciated

Firstly I had a look on newegg (I can't remember if you are from USA or not, sorry). And I have to say blurrrgggghhh I don't know most of the makes being sold at all. But I do know IcyBox and have been very happy with their products.

It claims "Without disk capacity limit"

To clone a disk I would recommend

http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm

I haven't used this specific software myself, I use their data restore stuff, but one of my colleagues informs me that it is the right stuff...

That looks kind of neat. I tend to use "Symantec Norton Ghost" for this kind of stuff. Perhaps it could be an option for you?

I have a copy of ghost 2003 too (the last good one), but that's paid for, and it kinda erks me to recommend something that needs to be paid for and use it once :P

*Edit*
But thinking about it I should really have given both as a recommendation and let hobbes_fan choose for himself

I use Acronis True Image. Cloning & restoring over a network is the feature I needed, because I don't like moving HDs from one PC to another and stuff doesn't fit on DVD anyway.

I am familiar with this one as well. It has a nice DOS-based GUI if you find that important. Otherwise, Norton has a bland-GUI that is practical all the same.
