Vocaloid2, the cutey j-pop style singing program.
Have you guys seen this new software released in Japan by Yamaha last week called VOCALOID2?
It's a synthesized singing software, where if you are skilled enough, you can make this cutey voiced girl named Miku sing... well, any song. Synthesized voice technology have been around for years, but never did I realize just how advanced it became! Unfortunately, there aren't very may examples available on Youtube, but here's one of them. This one is making Miku sing a polka song. The cute animation is made by the user himself, of course. Not included with the program. Others on youtube: If you guys have nikoniko video accounts, check these following ones out too.
The Haruhi one sounds pretty mechanical, but the others are very skilled. It all depends on how well the user programms and adjusts the singing. You apprantly have some flexibility to adjust the tones and pitches, as well reverbs. Sure, at this point she still sound mechanical... but no longer painful to the ears. And in the hands of skilled users, surprisingly good singing. One day, perhaps we will start to see REAL virtual voice actors and singers.

I saw this on niconico the other day cos it was in the rankings... well, I've heard people join together random clips and make it sound like it's singing by modifying the pitch of stuff, but this is pretty cute in a way.
Personally I get more of a chuckle out of Delay Lama though Waiiriiiiiiii

Though I don't find it much useful myself, I find it pretty interesting, well.. It does somewhat tempt me so see hear her sing some of the stuff in my collection, that would get to be pretty interesting.

I checked out clips of Miku's "sempai" MEIKO, which was part of the VOCALOID series (Miku is VOCALOID2), and either the people who uploaded clips of her were really good or I just way prefer MEIKO's voice!
Listen to this rendition of the Laputa theme song, Kimi wo Nosete: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm680506 It soudns a bit mechanical, but I think the high notes were done great... What really impressed me though was http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm981145 this!! I can't believe it's a machine voice... Then again, I guess Miku was made to be more of a cutesy j-pop style synthetic voice, so it's just my preferences I suppose. Someone already uploaded an original character song for Miku on nicovideo... I am so expecting doujins and character events to come up soon and cosplays of this too - if it becomes enough of a hit it could easily make for a good game aimed at otaku. Your software girl comes alive!1!!

Oh boy, should have expected this. Bound to get loads of fanart of her... I just saw one on niconico where some guy showed him digitally drawing a fanart of her - the full process from inking to all the colouring.
They have two more Vocaloid2 voices coming out - one looks set to be another cutesy girl type, I think? - and I don't know about the other, but well, in b4 ero doujins of all of them... I'm still waiting for a good rendition of a capsule song though, Miku's voice would be so suited for one! "Idol Fancy" would be best. Even "Retro Memory"... or actually, "Starry Sky" would be perfect since the singing is so manipulated you can easily use Miku's voice (and I'm under the impression it got really popular with all those im@s videos). But there's no 'karaoke version' so it'd be hard to make a remix of it or whatever I guess.

The American version of Vocaloid 2, Sweet Ann, unfotunately have a pretty hideous character image...
Sounds pretty decent as a country-style female singer though. Still, I think I prefer Miku. I wish they can make a male rocker version. Also, a Vocaloid that can do heavy metal would be awesome. @Maids! LOL at the one Miku singing BOEEEEE Gian style.

The debut of Vocaloid2: Hatsune Miku was welcomed a bit frantically in Japan.
In two week or so, many songs featuring Miku were uploaded to the site "nico nico douga". And as introduced by the post from Maids! Maids! Maids!, many fan art of Miku were produced also. Already Vocaloid only doujin event "Vocaloid M@ster" is planed to take place at 3th November. Quote:
Capsule's menber Yasutaka Nakata is producing techno idol "Perfume". The some songs of Perfume were sung by Miku already. One of them from YouTube: "Electro World" sung by Hatsune Miku (movie from IDOL M@ster): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p72T7S4zIF0 They say that a bit mechanical taste of Vocaloid's voice evoke the emotion of "robot-moe". "Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa" duet by Meiko and Hatsune Miku: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExuG-V-FInU "Futari no Moji-Pittan" from Game "Moji-Pittan" sung by Hatsune Miku: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q32IX6_xAmQ |

Ooh, I liked that Nausicaa one. Thanks for the Perfume link... there's so many videos being churned out now, it's hard to keep track.
I really don't like Perfume despite liking capsule though, so I'll still hold out that someone makes one for capsule anyway! The a capella Mojipitten one was amazing though. They got her to sound like the instruments a bit. There are some really talented people playing around with her. While we're into linking Hatsune Miku videos, I was really surprised to see that someone actually made one out of a Zabadak song! And "Tooi Ongaku", no less... I would have thought Zabadak is completely not suited for something as digital/mechanical as Hatsune Miku, and it's true, it sounds odd: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1029516 But I absolutely love this song as it is (Zabadak ftw!) and I think it's quite a challenge (plus the uploader also did the backing male vocals - kinda romantic in a way, a human male singing along with a programmed female). What really hit me was how ironic the last line of the lyrics were: "Why have humans let go of song". Later in the song (not sung here) there's a similar line, something about why humans forgot how to sing or something. Although I don't think mechanical voices will take over humans any time soon yet - not until I see one replicate Shiina Ringo and singers like her, and not sound funny.

Hatsune Miku does anime...
Potemayo theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkM-dApx2WQ An interesting interpretation. It's almost mournful. And speaking of mournful... Fly Me to the Moon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bze1ZczI-0 Her English is serviceable. |

That's not just any polka song, that's the polka song. As far as I can tell the whole meme started when someone took a scene from Bleach of the redhead (forgot her name) spinning an onion, and put it to polka music. Since then, I've seen many versions of it, frequently fan-art portraying the girl in different scenarios and clothing, but always spinning the onion, and always with some variation of that song.
Back on topic, this is pretty neat. I wonder along with aohige; if a group like Gorillaz, made up of fake characters, could gain so much attention and fandom, it doesn't seem unlikely that an entirely synthesized idol could perhaps do the same...

But I figured it's unimportant to the topic, so left out those details. To help focus on the topic of the actual Voice synthesizing technology, instead of the origin of MADs and songs.
