-1 out of 100(10 is still too generous). Entire show itself is a prank, a bad one. The director laugh to every poor souls who watched it, whether they like it or not.

If I'd rewrite School Days, I'd add parental influences (like confrontations between parents) and a less psychotic, more realistic reaction of the characters.

The problem is, that everything is too Higurashi (considering Higurashi came earlier) -- oh, make that too B-grade. The plot becomes too flat and well, Kotonoha's descent was all too predictable for some, even laughable. Makoto's indifference to whatever he's doing (he should at least have some doubts about having sex with the "mook" characters :P) and the fangirlism of the non-Sekai non-Kotonoha girls are disgusting, even for a man like me.

What's wrong with Higurashi? It's understandable to be paranoid, irrational, and violent when you have a disease that makes you paranoid, irrational, and violent.

That's why I took back my Higurashi comparison. I'd rather choose to compare School Days to a B-grade movie. I have no qualms about Higurashi, but I have no interests in watching it either.

Lol School Days. While I admit the ending was disturbingly creative the general plot is just too silly to take seriously anyways. They might as well have just crapped on the keyboard. Shock value alone can't really carry something. With flat characters I couldn't care less about and the sorry attempt at a plot just really hampers any chance of effectiveness. Basically it does avoid some harem cliche but in heading off the other end of stupidity, it fails to do any real deconstruction. Not that they cared anyways.

It's simply pornography as in "having no socially redeeming value". Or ultimately, pornography without porn. Might as well made it a hentai; would have been better off that way.

But at least the OVA is amusing. Overall, I'd rate it 2/10; it's probably not the worst thing possible given what it did try to pull off; I mean it did pretend to be some crappy harem romance series at first and then suddenly off the deep end. Unfortunately, that's really all that they came up with. So now it's just a crappy harem romance series with a moderately ugly twist. Could have been good but mostly wasted. D- for (non)effort.

Well, it can also serve as a PSA for the many dumbass anime male protagonists lying around. Learn well, assholes.

The story line seemed to have dragged on a bit. I felt like over all it was an acceptable Anime. The ending blew me away totally. I was expecting something big, but not quite that big.

But outside of the last episode, I can't think of many examples at all where School Days uses empty shock value. I think people make this show to be a lot dumber than it really is... I thought a lot of care was taken to balancing things so that the characters could be morons or jerks but still remain in-character and have believable reasons for acting in such a way, and I was also impressed with the very measured, gradual rate at which the characters lost themselves and changed from their beginning series selves to their end. Sometimes it seems like people think the School Days cast is stupid enough to break suspension of disbelief simply because they're not perfect, the same way anyone that shows any emotion or frustration in response to problems is emo, angsty, and annoying. (I'm mostly defending the first ten episodes here, I agree that the finale is over the top and so's 11 in parts.)

One thing that made me so angry with this series is the reason why it had such an impact - it was that good. They put everything together nicely and did just like you said, kept a nice balance.

These series gets a 4/10 for me. This mainly due to the lack of good characters. Now lets take a look at the three characters and see if the author wrote it so that the viewer would actually care about the characters.

Spoiler for School Days spoilers.:

The characters being weak (I mean in the actual sense, as I don't buy the notion of the series having all that weak writing, myself) makes the series bad? Oh, God, than the great majority of the human race makes us all look really bad, no? Oh, wait... I guess it does. But how's that a reflection on fiction, again?

And whoever said you were supposed to "believe in true love" as regards Makoto and Kotonoha? What happened to desperation and co-dependency?

This series is not about true love, that is for sure. It's very realistic except for the lack of parental supervision, which would have prevented the mind blowing (my mind) and heart breaking (my heart) scenes at the end.

Yeah, I always did ask myself where were all those kids' parents. Then again, it's not like in real life these kinds of situations don't occur at an alarming rate, as well...

Horrid series. Infact, I stopped on like episode 10.
You can never take this type of series seriously and actually care about the series -_-. I've read about what happens in the end. It still doesn't make up for the stupidity used in this whole damn thing. I gave the series 3/10 -_-

Yea, I would say there's nothing too shocking about the most of the show too but I would be referring strictly to the ending. But my dislike of the series really hasn't to do with people acting stupid or anything like that =It's perfectly natural for their judgement to be swayed with matters of love and hormones rather I simply didn't emphasize with them, thus I didn't care for them even though I really should have.

I mean I don't like this series at all, but I wouldn't call it unrealistic. In fact the show is well aware that the typical idea of a male being surrounded by tons of love of interests with only concern for himself is gonna hurt people. And the outcome isn't gonna be nice no matter what happens. So yes, it accomplished something different. I just don't care for how they did it.

edit: Well, I liked the uniforms though, so it wasn't a total loss.

So I guess I can officially join the "Makoto is a bastard" club, because he was indeed one. There were traces of what I thought would be his actual character; moments, like when he was talking with Setsuna alone(at the entrance ceremony as well as some moments in ep 6 or 7). This, even if he still blazed down the path of absurd denseness about what he was doing, should be who he really was. Otome said he was kinder as well back in middle school. So why do we end up with a ridiculous char that is so oblivious to what he's doing?

At least, at the end of episode 11, after seeing what he had done to Kotonoha, I thought he would understand the implications of his actions, even if he still met with a violent end. But instead, he acts EXACTLY the way he has from the latter half of the series, not even taking into account how Sekai was feeling. Maybe it was Sekai that led him on and 'tempted' him, but it was he that said Kotonoha was 'a bother' and 'boring' to Sekai . He said he liked Sekai more amongst other things. He NEVER says the opposite to Koto, even when he broke up with her in ep 10. This is why it's not truly Sekai's fault, imo. We've seen in typical fashion how such advances are carried out, Shuffle's Kaede being a good example. He took advantage of her kindness, even if it was under a subtle pretense of wanting to love him, and constantly remind everyone that he and Sekai were dating. I mostly thought as I watched the anime that Koto wasn't getting any love; getting bullied, ignored(but not from her perspective), etc, but when I thought about it at the end, is that really so? For him to just dump Sekai like that at the end, and make out with Koto right in front of her in the last episode, actually made me pity Sekai more. It was more properly emphasized that they were a couple as opposed to Makoto/Koto was, plus the baby and being ignored, Sekai surely got the shorter end of the stick. Koto was different. Her love wasn't particularly stemmed from "he's fun to be with" love, but an 'infatuation from afar' love, or maybe the love of being in love, further multiplied by reading romance novels and self-assuring herself despite his attitude at times with her.

edit: After watching the last ep a few more times, and looking at Makoto's nuances, maybe he DID slightly change. The wording he used when Sekai came over, I guess he didn't want her to have an abortion, but still had a hard time talking about it. Kinda sad, he still deserved to die, but he could have at least been able to redeem himself a single time had he managed to tell her that.

The one thing I truly wished that didn't happen was Makoto/Setsu having sex. I know that it may have been 'implied, but not known', but judging how Minami? tried to get him to see Sekai in ep 11 and he never didn't, I can only assume that Setsu did it with him. Setsu being with that bastard... makes my blood boil, even more than him doing anyone else >=0(. A minor thing is that I wished he died a slow, agonizing death, so that he could reflect on what he had done before he died.

Generally though, I dulled my senses while watching this, and I think it had the heavy dramatic atmosphere that I've been looking for recently. Although Makoto was a horrible char in that he was TOO oblivious to what was going on(or didn't care) and did nothing but think of himself, I enjoyed how balanced the story was in preventing you from knowing how his relationship(s) would end, with both Sekai and Koto having somewhat fragile relations that could tip over at anything(can't word this right =0\). Not my favorite show by any means, but it was enjoyable enough.

i dont think anyone really needed to die at the end because mikato saw how his actions had hurt people and was going to change by getting back together with katsura but i suppose it was too late RIP i suppose
