I love Shugo Chara! It's one of my favourite series right now I'm so happy there are other fans out there somewhere lol.

I like IkutoXAmu the best.. The prince is cool too but i like ikuto a bit better..
I wonder when Episode 2 will be subbed.

I love Shugo Chara, too. I hope ep 2 gets subbed soon . I love both Shugo Chara and Zombie Loan from Peach Pit. I just hope that the Shugo Chara anime will not be as short as the Zombie Loan one.

Zomfg I <3 how this series looks. especially the main character. <3 her character design, and the punkgoth style they put on her.

Quite possibly this series has my fav look of the season thus far.

I think I've seen a much bigger and probably much older one as well linked from WikiPedia's Shugo Chara! page.

Hello, my name is Mr. Monkey. I'm a 35-year-old hetero male and... I like Shugo Chara!
::muted applause from audience::
The first step is admitting it, right? Heh. Seriously though, this is a far cry from your typical mahou shoujo. Instead of the lead girl being kinda helpless and sad until she discovers her powers that she can use to make the world a better place, this girl is kinda tough and badass, and so far at least her powers don't help her actually do much of anything (besides learning that wishing for easy answers just gets you into trouble).
This show is like a cross between Otogi-Zushi Akazukin and Super Gals, with the shoujo sprinkled on top. I should point out that Akazukin isn't mahou shoujo really, it's western fairytale fantasy. And it is utterly cool. But back to the reviewing at hand... punk goth girl? Worried about real girl issues? How... understandable. That bit where she consults the "girls' health handbook" was hilarious, I had to make my wife watch it. Having special powers clearly puts Amu in a select group, but so far at least it's not so much about what she can do with those powers as how she has to adjust to the new people she's involved with. No enemy of the week to fight, and they even minimized the transform sequence by making it consist primarily of the shocked expression on her face as she changes.

Two complaints though. First is that her little chara guardians are so obnoxiously cute that I can't look at them without detaching my manhood and sealing it inside a lead-lined box, lest I be overwhelmed by the sappiness and become unable to perform as a male. I suppose it's too much to hope that one of the three will be like Buttercup from PPG, the dark and violent one?
Secondly, WTF is up with those dorky capes? When I saw the "guardians" in the OP, my first thought was that they look like sad RenFaire rejects. Then I thought, "No, they're just wearing ponchos. Sears ponchos!". Their costumer should be dragged out and shot. Although, it made me very happy when Amu comments on what a fashion disaster those capes are. Just show how cool she is.
Speaking of which...

Is it really that difficult to draw a plaid that moves and folds?
Unfortunately, I think it's actually quite hard to draw a plaid or other complex, repeating texture and have it move realistically, unless you're in high-budget 3D CG territory. At least in this case the textures are linked to the objects so they move... I usually can't even watch shows where the outlines of objects move around and the texture sits still inside them. Zetsubou Sensei being the sole exception I can think of, and even there it can get intrusive. I mean.... I could put textures into black outlines back in the 80's on a Mac Plus! Almost 25 years later, you'd think they could do better than that without spending a lot of money. Consider though that the textures here are primarily inside the guardians' outfits, which are already an affront to SCA costumers everywhere. So the textures just make 'em that much tackier.

Not much to say here that others haven't said. But as long as the female lead stays as she is (relatively) I will love this show. She's a little unsure of herself but she really does give off an aura of "cool", I found it funny when her parents said she was cool.

I'm interested to see how this love romance will work out. I'm assuming that this will be a love-triangle series based on people mentioning Ikuto (the cat dude).

Can't wait for episode 2

Humpty Lock xDDDD I lol'd IRL. The lock aside, it's a pretty nice anime actually. I liked the soundtrack (reminds me of Ragnarok) and the art, but this series is a bit "too cute" for me so I'm not 100% sure if I'm gonna keep watching. Most of the anime with girl heroines are a slight turn-off for me.

P.S.
Ep 2 is out.

What you were pointing out there was indeed very nice but only true for ep1, sadly.
Watch her unlock her own heart (followed by a full transformation scene), lock on the negative heart, for a final open heart attack on monster of the week #1 in ep2, and then say again that this is not a generic mahou shoujo show
I admit, the lead girl is cool. But unfortunately she is desperately trying to change.

Great episode! Can't wait to Su desu~ :P

And I don't believe that this will be a generic mahou shoujo, where they fight off a "monster of the week."

Well this is a mahou shoujo title with 2 opposing sides and she has those powers for something. Add onto it Precure is popular. Hmmm... I'd say that there is a good chance that fighting monsters is involved.

Also, that cool exterior is not the "real" her as she is constantly pointing out. That chick is pretty insecure. I'm expecting the "cool" self to disappear by the end of the manga run.

Okay, ep2 had a generic transform and an IQ-dropping special attack. It's hard to take the whole "fighting" thing too seriously though, when her first special attack consists of curing the clinically depressed. If the monster of the week consists mostly of unhappy people hatching black eggs, I don't see it taking up all that much screen time. Oh, and points for a transform that doesn't look like soft porn. Sure this is mahou shoujo in a way that Akazukin never was, but Amu as a character seems too realistic and non-generic to be calling this "just another mahou shoujo show".

IMHO you and Fimbul are missing one of the underlying themes here. Remember the bit where Ran tells her that her gymnastics performance was the strength of her real talent? Amu is entirely capable of being cool & spicy, she just needs more self-confidence and she'll stop trying to hide her true self. Which I'll bet ya a dollar isn't a "normal" personality. And it looks like the key to unlocking her transform is feelings of self-worth and determination. So I'm expecting just the opposite, learning to control her powers is going to mean accepting who she really is instead of trying to figure out ways to get lost in the crowd. Oh, and her blue Miki chara is "stubborn, willful", kinda disobedient... so don't be expecting her to turn into a Sasami.
I'd just like to say whooo! She's got a dark and serious chara now, almost Buttercup-like. Miki rocks! Now I just need to shop her onto someone playing a guitar.... heh.

The magic in this show just seems to be thrown in just for the sake of being a mahou shoujo show. It is silly-looking (and very pink for Amulet Heart). Heck, in the manga, it's mostly Amu hanging out with friends, and confronting Ikuto and very few pages spent on taking care of the X Characters (until the end of volume 2 I suppose).

Summary with screenies and commentary for episode 2 is up in my blog for those who want to read some more insights on the episode

as for the changes made to the anime, despite the rather fast pacing in making Amu transform and fight the eggs, I actually think it makes the episode more amusing and exciting. Otherwise, other people would find it boring, in a way As I've also mentioned in my post, adding scenes with Amu x Ikuto will always be welcome X3

EDIT: I see what ya mean now... That's what happens when people limited themselves to services like Veoh, crunchyroll and <insertcrappyvideohostingservicehere> (and hardsubs). n_n

This is something I would have never picked out as a series I would like, but after the second episode I am totally enjoying it. The personality of Amu and her little Guardian Chara are just priceless. And the full-up transformation sequence this week was great, too!

Haha thats what I was thinking when watching the preview...DESU!!!

Ah but yea where in full swing mahou shoujo here now with transformation sequences (Really really nice one too...Probably one of my fav ones) and pink heart attacks, which im loving heh.

Pretty sure this show won't be everyones cup of tea, but so far its one of my favorites of the season.
