Some shows will play fine with only ffdshow. Others will require more since ffdshow does not handle everything. It doesn't even include a media splitter which is necessary for softsubs. ffdshow is just one component in the CCCP and the CCCP wouldn't have been created if ffdshow was good enough by itself.
I'd recommend you install CCCP.

To be precise, installing ffdshow will enable you to play lots of codecs such as XviD, h264, AAC and AC3.
However, it will not enable you to play MKV or MP4 files, simply because ffdshow only provides the means of playing the contents of those files (the video and audio tracks) but it doesn't know anything about the structure of those files. That's where you need Haal's Media Splitter for. Then as NSW mentioned, you need VSFilter for soft-subtitles too. So in the end it's easier to install the CCCP which includes everything in one install. |

Furthermore CCCP tweaks a lot of settings in ffdshow and other components to make them work correctly.

Control Panel -> Regional and Language Settings -> Languages (tab) -> tick both check boxes, apply, restart or whatever that is needed and then it should work fine.
