de arimasu=desu (Present/Future Tense)
de arimasu ka=desu ka (Present/Future Tense [Question])
de arimashita=deshita (Past Tense)

You tack on "ka" to any Japanese sentence and it automatically becomes a question. It's not like English where you phrase the sentence differently. One of the few points of grammar in which Japanese is actually easier.

For example:
de arimashita ka=deshita ka (Past Tense [Question])

Yeah, and a minor character in Genshiken and a whole bunch of characters in other shows which don't occur to me at the moment. Quite a few characters have it as a linguistic habit to show that they are very old fashioned.

It's nice to explain the definition of "de arimasu," but it is probably more meaningful to explain what it tells the viewer about a person who says it.

Ah, so that's it.

All I knew was that "~de arimasu" was the longer form for "~desu" (desu is kind of the equivalent of a contraction in english, only now it's used as the formal form and "~da" is informal). That's certainly interesting. Cookies for you for knowing such an obscure nugget of knowledge!

general question regarding the WHOLE SnS series

I don'nt know where to post this cause theres a lot of threads going on but this one seems the most "generic discussion" thread so here goes:

Is yuji really NOT the main protagonist anymore because he fused with serei no hebi? I heared that yuji doesn't exist anymore and he's the MAIN vaillain.

can anyone update me as to what happened AFTER volume 18(lightnovel) of the series? did this series end there?... cause it's kinda bugging me since I read stuff over at wikipedia.

I don't mind spoilers so go ahead and please tell me the whole story after he fused with serei no hebi. also with IKE(i know he burnt out after he got dumped) and Yoshida(said she was still in shock but what happened to her after that?)

1.Yes Yuji became "Snake of the Festival" Sakai Yuji and is pretty much the strongest "villain" so far as he was able to "kill" Margery, beat the crap out of Wilhelmina, and capture Shana

2. It's Volume 16

3. Also, SotF Yuji wants to change the truth of the world and he needs Shana for that

Whoever wrote it on Wikipedia decided to add the actual 16 volumes + the 2 side stories (S, 0) and put down 18...

We don't know. All Flame Hazes stop aging when they become Flame Hazes, but we have no information as to Shana's date of birth nor the date in which she became a Flame Haze.

I have a question...just exactly how old is Yuuji, and how old is Shana? I think Yuuji is 15, and I know Shana looks 11 or 12, but she's been a Flame Haze for awhile, so she's got to be a bit older than that...does anybody know? I've just been curious, since I can't seem to find a definite answer.

Yuuji is 15.
Shana looks like 11/12, but her real age is unknown.
