I highly welcome the return of Ecole Du Ciel. I thought it ended at volume 11, so this is quite the surprise. I've only read upto volume 9 thanks to Tokyopop's release, though that's a slow as ever anyway.

As for the Ecole du Ciel thread, yeah i can't even find it even with a google search, so it must be lost.
Yea I remember like 5000 years ago we had like a database lost or something. A shame really . What else is in the Macross Ace magazine? Is it basically like Gundam Ace? Featuring several side stories for the Macross franchise? Wow that's insane, I never expected it to have expand itself to include more side story stuff.

Back to Gundam - Ecole Du Ciel ends at a cliff hanger in Volume 11, and I've been waiting...for literally 2 years. I wasn't too happy about that, and I was pretty freaking mad because it was so good and popular that it SHOULDN'T be canceled.

Anyway, maybe we should open a Gundam Manga thread.

Yeah it's pretty much the same as Macross Ace. Upto the sixth volume now, and worth it alone for Macross the First. There's been some seriously good (and new!) material in each volume, which pleases me ever so much.

Wow so 11 ends with a cliffhanger? Guess i'm kinda glad that Tokyopop's releases are so slow, though then again volume 09's cliffhanger is seriously painful. Shame there's no way of me reading volumes 10 and 11 before it returns. Still, i'm seriously glad it is doing.

About Gundam 00 S2 Question:

What episode was it that Linda gives Feldt the white flower from the Middle East in which Feldt then gives to Setsuna. I remember that scene is where Feldt blushes thinking when told where that flower originated.

What makes a "Gundam", a "Gundam" in the UC universe?

Is it the V-fin? The way the head looks? I mean one can distinguish a gundam from a normal mobile suit by the v-fin and the head primarily. But is there something about a gundam that distinguishes it from other mobile suits?

In Wing, gundams were made of gundanium and in 00, the GN Drives I guess? But then everyone got GN Drives and the main "gundams" were still called gundams so I don't know.

In Unicorn, they instantly identified the Unicorn Gundam as a Gundam-type mobile suit. But what is a gundam-type mobile suit aside from the gundam-esque head? Weren't there a bunch of fodder gundam-type mobiles as well like in 08th MS team?

^ There were a few Mobile Suits like Tallgeese that were made with Gundamium too. Wing doesn't really have a proper explanation of what a Gundam should be aside from it's face. In Wing Gundam faces are pretty standard so it's fine.

In UC, the name Gundam is a symbol. That's all it really is, it's really just a real life thing. They built a super mobile suit and named it Gundam, it's successors and it's related units would all be Gundams. GM (if they didn't retcon this) stands for Gundam Mass Produced. The Gundam V fin stands for Victory since it was under the Victory Project during One Year War if I remember correctly.

All other Gundams that are not made by the Feds probably have a Gundam name just for a symbolic thing because the idea of Gundam probably brings good fortune and morale. For example, Gundam Mark 2 was a direct successor in the RX line. While Zeta Gundam was designed by Kamille and built by AE, in this case the name Gundam is probably tacted onto the Zeta Project to give it more value and strike fear into its opponents.

That's really all there is to it, the definition is just as flimsy as it is in real life. I'd say 00 is probably the first series that made such a distinct definition of what a Gundam should be, an MS that uses original GN Drives.

Well, then you need to consider the Thrones, Arche, Reborns, etc., all of which aren't much different then your typical GN-X or Ahead as far as usage of GN drives go.

A Gundam is a mobile suit that is called a Gundam... That's basically true for all of the timelines... Except for FC I guess, since Gundams = mobile fighters in that particular timeline.

You're right, I totally forgot about the Thrones, Arche and Reborns.

Regardless of the naming reasons for each series, overall design has something to do with it, particularly when it comes to the facial design (including the V-fin). How else would you recognize that it's a Gundam besides its power? A lot of the series have mobile suits matching or exceeding the capabilities of a Gundam, but aren't called such (with the exception of the GN-XIV and that's a bit... complicated there anyway).

^ I did some thinking about this and I realized that the only common aesthetic element from all Gundam designs (that I know please point out if I'm wrong) is the beard. The beard itself can sport a different color (usually red) or a different shape, but you will never see a Gundam without a beard. You would see Gundams without the V-fin (Ez-8), you would also see Gundams without the eyes (Mono-eye and Arche's 4 slits), but you'll always see a Gundam with a beard.

Although we have cheaters like Gun-Ez and Tallgeese 2 with a Gundam face but still not a Gundam. So in the end Brightman is right and it really does boil down to whatever happens to be named a Gundam. So here's how it is, you can't be a Gundam without a beard, but having a beard doesnt automatically classify you as a Gundam.

EDIT: missed out "doesnt"

Turn A's mouthpiece is kind of like that beard/chin thingie, and the center-of-the-V-fin thing combined into one.

Zeta Gundam doesn't have a "beard" or chin.

It does. Its just colored white.

As jonli said, it can be any color, though most commonly red.

Like Brightman said, that red thing on his chin is the beard, you can argue that he doesn't have a V-Fin and just a mustache though.

I still can't think of any Gundam without a beard...even super abstract Gundams like Mark 5 and the weird stuff you see in Advance of Zeta all have beards.

What about Mandala Gundam and Mammoth Gundam? Can't see Mandala's mouth and Mammoth has an entire trunk.

^HAHAHAHAHAHA OH LORD!!!!! I burst out laughing when I saw that picture. Yeah I guess there really is no way around this one.

I guess the only way to break that formula is for some new Gundam designer to make a face design that's even more alienating than Turn A's design. Or maybe design a Gundam face that implies the shape of the beard using negative space.

Did the Virgo and Virgo II mobile dolls come with a standard cockpit? I was curious, since Taurus mobile dolls retain cockpits.
