It's all about adapting it to the specific medium.

Since both are based on the novel, it's natural that there would
be differences in overall length. I've read some novels that are
more than a thousand pages long, yet the screenplay for that
particular novel was not much longer than ninty minutes.

Now, a sense of overall scale could be of use. In a movie, a thirty
second scene can effectively illustrate one or even two lengthy
chapters of a novel. This is due to the fact that were pages of
text are needed to describe the reactions and expressions of all
characters in a scene, it only takes a second for you to visually
percieve and interpet them. The manga is not that different,
except instead of pages of text it uses pages of images.

The novel is quite good. I started reading the original Japanese
one but never got more than a few chapters in. (oh the kanji,
so many kanji... ) Recently an English translation has become
available. I've purchased it and am currently reading it. If your
interested, you can get the book here.

PS. The book makes the movie and manga look like the Berenstien Bears...

People have been saying, the manga is great and rich in content if you enjoy the movie. As Trondd mentioned, the manga give you the background detail of each characters which make you understand why each character acts and does thing differently. (its like seeing all the pieces assembled into a picture)

After reading the manga, you will probably appreciate the movie more too. jmo

The Manga really makes you feel for the characters so the emotional effect of their deaths is more palpable. I am reading 5 right now and

Well obviously since they have been talking about reading it. I'm sort of hesitating to buy the book, because I heard there were grammar mistakes in the translation. Would it be a good idea to buy it?

Oh.. and where can I find the movie? (buying or fansubbed, I don't really mind either though I'd prefer buying it with subtitles)

It's not subtitled, unfortunately, but you can purchase the movie from this site.

If you like that, I'd recommend this. I've been meaning to get this one for a while
now, the Battle Royale collar alone would make it worth it.

Oh, any version of the movie with subtitles is a bootleg and I'd suggest avoiding those.

Those link are for the official, region two, DVDs and as they don't
include subtitles I'll point out again that only bootlegged versions
of the movies have subtitles.

I got my copy of Battle Royale with subs from www.animetoxic.com. No clue if its official or anything, but it looks just like the real deal. Not like its some cheap cd in a plastic bag or something.

That site sells bootlegs. And no, bootlegs don't usually come as a cheap cd in a plastic bag because then they wouldn't be able to fool you into buying it. Bootlegs look almost like official releases most of the time. You'd just have to consider why it's so cheap and why it's so few discs.

I got the first two volumes of the manga, so far real good! Alot is different from the movie and it explores the backgrounds of each character more. I think I prefer Kitano from the movie instead of Kamon the teacher in the manga. Though Kamon is more evil. As for Battle Royale 2, I hope you get some enjoyment out of it. I just thought it was ok, even after overlooking the anti-american crap they spew.

The premise of Battle Royale is fantastic. The movie wasn't the most well made but the point was there. The manga has everything the movie lacked. It has much more of an impact. You get to see what kind of people the characters are and the type of relationship they have with their classmates before they slaughter eachother. Much more shocking and emotional than the movie which doesn't tell you a thing about the characters.

i wonder if u talk about Kitano's movie.
If so there is actually an official release on dvd support in France, with franch subtitles. Would be really a shame if this movie can't be found in an eng-sub.

Now i may mistake, and confuse with an anime called battle royal, but so far with your discribes I don't feel wrong
