It's just me, but shouldn't that sword not have a blue crystal at the top? Wasn't it red in the book to match the blade?

I'm a fan of any sword that had a rifle attached to the handle. Bang!

Yep. Yet another thing the movie f***ed up. God, it was horrible. But I think the red blade is sweet, regardless of congruency issues.

mm, me gotta love bayonets. aside from the coolness of it when it was used in Hellsing (the manga), there's a general feel of up-close-and-personal with it, especially when you choose that over the gun attached to it.

On another note, I love the simple design of the Ida and Khukuri~

and finally, you almost can't watch anime without seeing a katana, it's still on of my favorite swords, in any case.

thinking about it a bit further, there was an episode in Full Metal Panic Fummofu where Sosuke draws out a knife that had a piano wire concealed in it. That was cool, too...

The Dagger of Time. I can slow or rewind time as I want lol.

Honestly, I like katanas more too. They are light and swift.

I find it funny that people say katanas (daito specifically) are light. They really aren't; in fact the weight of the katana is what helps it make the cuts fast and strong enough to slice off limbs. I can say with experience from tameshigiri that katanas are NOT light, nor are they swift and so easily maneuvered as portrayed in a lot of movies. The cuts are meant to be large, deep, and quick in order to lop off limbs/cut through clothing.

That's not to say that katanas aren't my favorite, though, because I wouldn't be practicing kenjutsu if it wasn't.

A Sword that's rusty and serrated. Serrated so it could saw through innards and rusty so that it could be brittle enough to fragment inside the body (Plus the tetanus factor).

Katana, imo it's more well rounded than the others, both good for stabbing and slashing. rapiers are only good for slashing because of how thin they are, scimitars...not to sure about them really. a spear would be my second choice because of their range.

The type of weapon I would choose would be a Bardiche or a Longsword... also is this limited to pre or post firearms era, medieval times?

wellllllllll, actually there was more than just swords. A mace makes a significant impact no matter what kind of armor one has. Also battle axe.....

In my case.... I'd probably prefer a Viking style single-handed sword and a scramasax, but I'd have a bladed polearm for keeping the buggers far away.

I saw a nodachi longsword is pretty cool =O

cuz they specifically point it out in vol 4. Setsuna's Long blade.

Completely false. The last thing you want to do with a rapier is try to slash your opponent - it is designed for thrusting attacks with a complex cross-guard that protects the hand. While it isn't impossible to try and cut something, that is not what the blade is intended for. It can be completely lacking a cutting edge as well, because that is not what the sword is designed to do. Rapiers were designed to puncture unprotected body parts (face; neck; joints), not to cut stuff

I can only imagine the rapier snapping; the blades're too thin to withstand the rigors of a slashing attack.

I actually prefer my flail over swords, though we have about 8 swords, my newest is a rapier-like one, which is light enough for me to handle w/ my bum wrists and still be mildly feasable (pity it's not actually battle quality). It's got wolves carved into the pommel and hilt and whatnot Early bday gift from the hubby.

In our medieval recreation group (no, NOT SCA tyvm), we were the only people who did NOT own a katana of some form. Amusingly enough, my husband was the only person with any Japanese in him
He prefers european swords, specifically anything like a shortsword where it's lightweight enough to wield 2 at once. Alternatively, he's oft seen with a damascus viking broadsword I got him a few years back.
We do actually own a katana, now; he inherited it when his father passed away, it had been a gift from my mother in law's brother when my inlaws got married, so when they died, it came to us...

My son has a miniature version of the middle sword here
and by miniature I mean it's approx half the size and lacks a sheath, but it's still his We'll make him a sheath for it in a couple of years for his coming of age. He uses wooden swords and whatnot for sparring practice, as does his sister. I've only let him live blade a few times under close supervision.

I got 2 Katana's, one of the medium length ones, the short one, a ninja sword, loads of different kinds of nunchukus, 2 Bo Staffs throwing stars etc.

Then some random type blades that are all weird...

Bo staff with a katana as a backup would be my choice of weaponry!!
