Can't run H264 or 1280X720 files

I wish to confirm my suspicions that it's my graphics card actually, cause every time I do run or download such a file/anime/movie I always get a error and my screen goes 8 bit on me.

There's a picture of my comp ^^; Ignore the funky error and everything else.

If it's actually my graphics card...

What's the...what's the word...cheapest graphics card that can run h264 and 1280 x 720 files? I don't want the best. Just the thing that can run it ^^;

Matey I'd probably black out your name and o/s serial number on that pic and repost it. Also error messages what do they say. You are using CCCP right?

Before we go about on a buying spree it'd best to diagnose the problem first. That error message don't tell us much. We also need to know if your PC has an AGP or PCIE slot. It's a HP Pavillion but we need a model number should be on the case somewhere with that we can assists further. We'll need to find out if there's a vidoecard in there already so if there is one we need to know what's an upgrade.

IMO there's one thing really in need of serious attention - 500mb RAM.

Huh? I'm perfectly fine with 512 MB, both on Linux and on XP

I'd say it's a problem only if he were to be running Vista, which he isn't.

But if he's running onboard GFX (which I suspect considering HP PC's and similar use integrated videocards for the vast majority of their standard models which go from 32mb to 128mb) then it becomes problematic IMO but that's an assumption on my behalf and would really be more of an overall performance issue. It was just something that really stuck out to me.

Changed ^^; Thanks for the warning.

I've used the Codec Pack. I also use windows media player classic to play it...I'm gonna write down the error message actually if it helps.

My Girlfriend was webcamming me anyway so I have that picture. ^^;

^^; I'm sorry for being troublesome.

Any way I can find that on my comp? Cause I got this comp a long time ago too...

Also I'm not that comp wise either so a step by step instruction would do ^^;

Sorry once more.

my graphics card is: Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/PV Graphics controller

If your pc is an HP Pavillion, look on the front of the case, probably near the bottom, it should have the model number.

Hmm that's old all right, that pc was sold probably somewhere around 2003.

Does it happen with only h264 fansubs or also the regular xvid avi one too?

Well I currently tried Gundam 00 from Gundams.net which is supposed to be Xvid.

Files around 170ish MB are fine..

When I try 200ishMB files I seem to crash.

So solely based on a file's size it crashes?

ok let's try doing a couple things, if these do not work, then your card isn't going to play h264 well being that old sadly.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the CCCP pack. But use the newest version from the website:
http://www.cccp-project.net/

If that doesn't work, you can try reinstalling your graphics driver, using this here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...os=228&lang=en

Go to control panel - system, click and open device manager and then find display adapter, under it you should see your intel card listed, right click and select uninstall. You may have to reboot. If windows pops out a message saying new device found and to install something click no. Once back, install the HP driver and follow the instructions.

Well the episode now works perfectly.

but, when the computer restarted..

That error appeared, but everything still worked out fine. No System restart or anything, everything seems to be running normally.

What actions did you take? The CCCP one, or the the driver reinstall also?

The first problem is now ok but now there's another problem? oh my^^

Well if the error doesn't appear again after another reboot you should be ok. It's just a reminder that windows stopped (from last time). Lowering the acceleration doesn't make any sense unless there is more playback problems and you already reinstalled the driver.

If problems persist and if still considering a vid card upgrade

according to your model no and HP's website
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_USEN
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...name=c00018887
you will have an AGP slot

for High definition playback the best cards to get would be the 2400pro as it supports hardware acceleration of high definition codecs like h.264 (around $80usd), but to be honest it's not going to take much more to run 1280x720 h.264.

I took both >>; (( Yes I know thats horrible of me XD ))

I'm gonna download a h264 file and see what happens.

I may double post just to inform, sorry again. *bows*

It may have been with you that I had this discussion, but we established that those video cards that support H.264 decoding won't help out in terms of fansubs. The reason is that it requires something special from the program itself, which goes into licensing and all. If you can get an application like PowerDVD to play fansubs, you may have some luck. Otherwise, don't waste money on a graphics card that can do that; even the cheapest of AGP graphics cards today are pretty powerful for non-gamers. Save money and put it towards a newer CPU in the future.

Really? Hmm interesting. I've noticed a little bit better cpu performance a good 10-20% reduction at peak, but that could be a placebo effect. I've done a few system tweaks as well but I doubt that would account for that much either. I'll rip it out sometime this week and do a cPU load analysis before and after. But yeah as I stated there isn't a lot more he needs performance wise. considering I should of added 720p runs fine on a 1.7 centrino and 915 gms chipset laptop in my experience (I;m not too up to speed on integrated laptop gfx as for me gfx card=gaming, my lappie just doesn't have the grunt to deal with the most basic games I play) . Bang for buck though considering the cost of AGP cards, considering most I've seen start at around 60-70 anyway

720p h264 with softsubs, and even at 29.97fps runs fine (well, drops a few frames here and there) on my 1.4GHz Centrino with a 855GM chipset...

With a laptop that old you would probably be better off saving money for a CPU upgrade. Hardware acceleration only works if your software knows it's there and is capable of taking advantage of it. I have a moderately high-end graphics card (X1900XT) but it barely twitches even when I'm playing 1080p h264. Most media players aren't going to try and offload decoding tasks onto the GPU.
