Ni-Oh, Dark Sengoku Action RPG [PS4]

Funny backstory- Apparently this game was announced 10 years ago for the PS3.

Yes, this is the game that out-"Last Guardian" even the Last Guardian!

EDIT (for official trailer) :

People are calling it Witcher (Samurai Geralt) + Onimusha (Japanese Demons) + Dark Souls (because everything is Souls)

Officially though, the only thing Koei Tecmo has described it is, and I quote-

Quote:
...very difficult to clear on the first try.
Personally, this is my favorite of TGS2015.

P.S - Team Ninja might be involved. confirmed involved.

Have that Way of the Samurai vibe, but more flashy. I guess it's worth looking forward to.

2015. The year when lost projects come back to life. Long awaited remakes appear again. And JRPG franchises give out their newest instalments. My hype reserves are running out. too many games!! XP

Feels more like Onimusha to me (Onimusha 2 was amazing). Can't see the Souls connection to it though since it only showed combat and this looks way way faster and more actiony than your traditional Souls game.

Should be worth looking into for the gameplay since it's Team Ninja studio handling it.

Ni-Oh’s Development Kept Going On Thanks To Over 10 Years Of Anticipation From Fans

Quote:
Here are some notes from the interview with Koei Tecmo:

  • Ni-Oh was originally developed as a launch title for the PlayStation 3.
  • The focus was to push the action elements instead of focusing on the RPG parts.
  • Koei Tecmo continued working on the game behind the scenes, even while hearing people say “you guys just announced it haven’t even made anything, right?”
  • The game runs at 60fps.
  • It was decided to make it into a console exclusive title as Koei Tecmo wish to be able to use the PlayStation 4’s quality to show the world more of Japan’s yokai culture.
  • There will be giant yokai boss fights.
  • Koei Tecmo are currently thinking of some kind of opportunity that will allow players to directly try out Ni-Oh before it releases.
  • Famitsu magazine has a corner where fans can voice out their most anticipated games. Thanks to Ni-Oh being on it for the past 10 years, it gave Koei Tecmo the drive to continue developing the game without stopping.

Clearly branching out . Why just limit himself to one franchise ?

Looks mostly like Onimusha indeed, running at 60 fps makes it an insta-buy. The trailer is very promising and the bosses seem creative (except the rajoumon with eyes and the Skull Reaper at 1:21, came right out of Aincrad). Here's hoping it will be considered worth the wait whenever it comes out...

Very excited for this. While Sony had a lot of good announcements, this is my personal favorite. Especially because of the involvement of the Sengoku Era and Youkai.

I think one of the bosses was an Umibouzu? pretty awesome. Would like to see bosses/enemies like Yuki Onna, Hyakki Yako, Mizuchi, Nure-Onna (I swear I'm not pulling this from an LN!), or Jakotsu Baba.

Holy shit, Team Ninja has basically made a Dark Souls game

A quote for similar

Quote:
In Ni-Oh, you wander about various unpleasant locations fighting enemies who can end your life in a matter of three or four hits. Meanwhile, your own weapons require upwards of half a dozen strokes to dispatch them. You can switch between weapons on the fly. Equipped weapons are visible at all times I saw a sword and a spear in action, as well as what looked like a bow, but this wasn’t used.

Combat appears to emphasise dodging, blocking and precise timing over rushing in to hammer away at baddies. Groups of grunts are especially deadly. When you approach a location where a nasty knot of foes hang out, you’ll see a number of sword markers, presumably indicating the death of another player or NPC. I know it’s not your own death, because I saw the player character die and return to the same spot to retrieve – whatever.
A quote for difference

Quote:
There was something a bit odd at death markers, too. Where in Dark Souls or Bloodborne you’d summon a ghost to observe a death, Ni-Oh offers you a couple of choices from a menu. On one occasion, the player made a choice that resulted in an enemy appearing from the marker. It dropped a treasure when killed. Also, when you get back to your own death marker to retrieve, there’s a golden wolf.

One other difference that sparked my interest was a UI indicator showing the moon. Does something change depending on the time of day or phase of the moon? I was oddly reminded of Demon’s Souls’ world and character tendency indicators.
The full article is definitely worth a read

The main protagonist's name is William Adams - He's a half with a Japanese Father and a Western Mother. And he may or may not be base on this guy https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Adams_(sailor)

Some gameplay details:

Quote:
  • On the bottom right are four icons that determines fighting stance.
  • Your Offensive and defensive capabilities are dependant on stance and can be changed on the fly.
  • There are bloddy katanas on the ground where other people have died.
  • Apparently you can active them and fight against them for good loot.
  • (I can't make out what word they used to describe them so I'm not sure if you fight them in PvP or if you fight AI units that look like the players.)
  • You can change armor and weapon in real time, so make sure you're in a safe area when you do.
  • There are also spears in the game that are good against groups of enemies.
  • There are guardian spirits that William can see and infuse into his weapon for a limited time like the flame wolf and the blue owl.
  • Guardian spirits appear after you die. (I guess as a helping hand?)
  • You will have to decide when to use it apparently, so there might be a limit.
  • There are shrines where you level up with the experience you've saved up, and where you can change spirit.
  • In some locations you might come across some strange flimmering (can't make out what they call it), which when you approach will spawn a youkai that drops good loot.
  • The boss shown is called an onryou (revengeful demon), a powerful oni.
  • You heal in realtime so it's important to look for an opening to do so.
  • When he heals he infuses his weapon with what looks like a blue owl spirit, different from the fire wolf from earlier.
A longer gameplay footage, might be a bit hard to see though...

Definitely sounds and looks like a Onimusha x Souls crossover game. I wonder what kind of Guardian spirits you'll have available to use. At the shrine, it looked like you can play around with your attributes.

I wouldn't call it anything like souls for the simple reason that the speed of that dash is WAY too high, it completely alters the flow of combat.

Ni-Oh gameplay trailer from PSX, showing off more of the combat and a certain familiar system...

EDIT: 1080p, 60fps, ignore the title until change... I swear it's not Ni no Kuni

Yeah combat looks even faster than Bloodborne, and that 60fps doesn't hurt too.

Two things that gives it that vibe is the lock-on and stamina system.
