This is kind of a cross-post from the Is Anime for Kids thread, but my parents don't like anime nor try to watch some anime to really know what it is. Honestly though, she has work, so I can understand. What she doesn't understand, though, is that anime isn't just for kids, so therefore I have to watch all my anime in secret.

I frequently tell my mom about anime and how it's a normal hobby just like any other one's, but I bet she secretly worry about my maturity XD

Yeah if my parents knew I watched anime they would probably gouge my eyes out and tell me to "become a man"...they're all about being responsible and leaving behind anything that could be associated with prepubescence.

Sorry, mazer8, but your parents sound like complete idiots (and I'm a parent probably around their age).

Play, entertainment, and creativity are essential at all ages -- if only to keep you from becoming an asshole.

I actually got into an argument with my dad about this very thing today. I was talking about how happy I was that I finally got the last DVD's of my Platinum: EVA boxset in the mail, and he just laughed at me. So I asked him what was so funny, and he says "That stuff is so lame." After rebuking his comment, I politely inquired, "Just how much anime have you seen." His response: "I don't have to see it. I hear you watching it all the time. The dialogue in it is so lame, that I know it can't be good." For the record, the only show I've ever watched in his presence is Neon Genesis Evangelion. When I try to suggest that he should watch Princess Mononoke, or something like that, he responds with the "it's lame" line over and over again, until I give up.

It is this blind dislike of something that drives me up a wall. I introduce the man to sushi, Wii, a veritable bevy of movies he would not have otherwise seen, and he's happy to have enjoyed them all. Yet, when it comes to anime, he simply will not budge. Do any of you have suggestions for a way I might introduce him to anime, or should I give up hope and resign myself to the fact that, when it comes to anime, there's just no winning?

your dad sounds like an immature kid Quzor. my dad's a jerk that doesn't seem to understand anything i say, but a couple times he sat down and watched Initial D 4th stage with me (why i have NO idea) i had to explain to him the concept of drift racing (not the showy kind, the kind you use in low traction situations like with rally cars)

anyways, my mom apparently watched Myself;Yourself once (i have a network setup at my house to share anime between our computers) she said it seemed pretty dumb. I needa get her to watch Spice and Wolf or Lovely Complex still though.

(on a side note, she's finished Yakitate Japan AND Nana before i did haha.

lemme get this straight.... someone's *DAD* called something their child liked ... "lame"?

They actually *used* the word "lame" to make fun of what their kid liked?

argh......

Well, I'm 23 years old, so I can handle my 56 year old father calling something I enjoy, lame; I'm a big boy now. It just bugs me that, despite everything he was so skeptical about enjoying, that he enjoys now (see above list), he just refuses to even give anime a shot. Does anyone else notice this sort of thing; that, no matter what you've introduced your parents to in the past, they just can't take anime seriously? Maybe I should just give up on him, and then when he asks me for my opinion, I can counter it with the childish remark, "you won't like it anyway dad, it's lame."

Actually, Quzor ... that's a *great* response. A nice way of deflating his point and possibly making him think "hmmmm, am I that predictable?"

The Briar Patch tactic ... heh.

my mother doesn't like anime
hell , she doesn't even like movie and tv series.

my mother always believe in fact. so she just watch news and hystory channel.
pretty bad.
she hates lord of the ring, she hates anime, she even hates it when I bought detective conan manga and told me that it is porn book!

hell I even tried to bring her to theatre to watch harry potter, and actually she watched for only like 5-10 minutes and then slept thru the rest! (that happened too to lord of the ring 2 and 3, jurassic park, independence day, king kong, da vinci code, pirates of the carribean 1,2,3, etc, what a waste of money, she would rather sleep and waste the ticket money than watching it).

to her, anime, movie, and tv series are useless to watch and not true and too fictional and rely on pornography:P.

my father actually doesn't mind watching anime with me, but to some limit. the only he anime he like to watch with me is black lagoon

Got my mom to watch Mushishi. She liked it, though she thought it was one episode per disc. I told her otherwise, but she hasn't really gotten another chance to watch it.

Course, that IS something she'd like. Ironically enough, despite all the praise it gets, it's something my ANIME FAN sister would never watch (Think the latest thing she's watched is Chobits, with the exception of below). She gives me so many excuses why she doesn't watch much anime anymore, I'm wondering how the bloody hell she was able to watch MoHS. It boggles my mind. I barely even remember half of them. And then I have to find a way to get her to watch Lucky Star, as she... NOW has an interest when she didn't really seem to before.

Well yea, from my experience mothers are rather weak at watching romance type series (especially the high school themed ones). I duno why but it may have something to do with the "been there done that now it's old" feeling

Though if she is serious and didn't like M;Y because it was too childish then give her something heavy...like saikano :3

I don't think it was that it was too childish, I just think it wasn't her type. Haha, saikano wouldn't be a bad thing to show, too bad I don't have it anymore.

Well with my dad he liked the violence in Black Lagoon. He liked how they swore, blew things up, shot people and generally ran amok. Rurouni Kenshin I think he liked because of how kickass some of the fight scenes were.

So yeah, he's a shounen kinda guy.

He absolutely hates Inuysaha though.. hahaha. Thought it'd be best to set him on some Adult Swim, but he runs out the room whenever it came on. I'm not sure if I should try and start him on Death Note, as it's kinda complex and my dad needs things to get straight to the point. Ehh, didnt mean to make this a long response.

haha, my father does not think inu yasha is good, but he watched it anyway. my father likes roberta part the most:P. and about kenshin, my father does not really like it, but he finds that some of the dialogs there are interesting, and of course he finds that kenshin vs shisiyou fight is amusing too.

you could try my tactic:
tell your father about a story (of course about the anime that you want him to watch:P), just don't tell him that it is an anime. see his responds, if his responds if positive, usually he will ask what is the title of that story, and you could start giving lures lol.

usually I do this to lure him in

just that it is not successful against my mother>.<

The funny thing is, my mother loves asian dramas where the plot is no different from a shoujo anime.
However, she refuse to watch a mature shoujo anime because it is "drawn"
