You expect something ... but something completely different happends

Right now Im watching Mamoru-kun ni Megami and I`m loving it because its the complete oppisite of what Im used to seeing. "Loli feminine" boy with masculine woman, saving the world organization that really doesnt save anything. What others are out there that are like that? EX: tough biker guy that enjoys cooking fancy cakes.

Oh wow, though I know I've seen a lot of this, nothing comes to mind quickly.
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid's OVA has a very serious high-ranking military officer turn out to be an otaku, Higurashi's cute Rena-chan and amiable Mion and Shion turn out quite differently, several elements of Shuffle! were unexpected, nothing comes to mind right now.

This GIF was also pretty unexpected:

Definitely 5 Centimeters per Second, because nothing was expected there.

Another is Kino's Journey. Aside from the ending which totally caught me off-guard, there were many times when the series caught me off-guard, especially regarding Kino and...Kino's abilities.

REC's first episode was win.

Seen REC, Shuffle, and FMP. <----- Yes, the officer in the Second raid is exactly what Im looking for!

Lost interest in Kino. Ive heard good stuff about 5cm per second, I might have to try it.

When did you lose interest in Kino's Journey? I myself found it hard to get through the first four episodes but after that it was really good.

Gah, but at least one of my suggestions was viable.
And yes, you'll probably want to try 5 Centimeters per Second. It's probably not the conventional "Whoa!" "Really? Really!" (haha.) that you're looking for, but it's still one of the highlights of this year.

I saw it when I was younger, (hence the rating that I apparently was flamed for) and I found that at times, you couldn't understand some of the symbolism and such. If you didn't come into the series ready to think about a lot of the stuff, it probably felt rather pointless.

I may have to rewatch it now so I can really see get all of the series.

Erm...Neon Genesis Evangelion?

I expected a good ol' mecha flick, and ended up totally dumbfounded over how it all ended.

Admittedly though, it doesn't seem to be what you're looking for, even though it does feature an organisation that supposedly exists to "save the world", but ends up saving nothing.

Yoshimori from Kekkaishi. He's supposed to be a pretty powerful (full of potential) Kekkaishi, but he likes to make cakes and drink coffee milk, and sometimes, that gets into the way of protecting the sacred land.

So you are talking about bait and switch? They make you believe one thing, and then do something else?

Pick a Clamp anime really, any Clamp anime. They love to give you red herrings or make things seem too easy...and then flip the events entirely. For example...

Magic Knights Rayearth has pretty much one of the most shocking endings I've seen.

Spoiler for Ending, big spoiler:

Spoiler for For the second season:

Tsubasa Chronicles
.
Spoiler for OVA, big spoiler:

Spoiler for Minor other spoilers:

Angelic Layer
Spoiler for Ending:

XXXHolic. There's far too many things that are different than what you expect to even get into.

Cardcaptor Sakura
Spoiler for mutiple important spoilers:

In other recent romantic animes...

Canvas 2. The matching is quite a change from what you'd expect.
Spoiler for Pairing:

Kimikiss Pure Rouge. This is speculation as there's not an ending yet.
Spoiler for Pair possiblity.:

X TV done that with me.
Samurai Champloo also tricked me every now and then.
I think that a lot of Anime are unpridictable.

um this first part is a question.. sorry for asking it here.. but is higurashi that type of show? which starts of with something, and becomes something completely different? or is it fairly obvious it was going to go the way it does all along?

on the note of this topic, i second evangelion..

and maki from seto no hanayome -it fits exactly what you were looking for..

FMA did have a couple of good ones.. though you probably could figure them out.. king bradley was well done in my opinion, i loved the scene where

Spoiler for :

Yes, yes it is. I can't really say a great deal on the subject because the entire point of the show is the mystery and things happening that you weren't expecting and so on. Season 2 in particular turns around completely compared to season 1 with a lot of 'oh, so THAT'S what happened' moments coming to light It's one of my favourites for good reason

ah fantastic, in that case i recommend higurashi as well.. i havnt seen it myself but as you can see there are plenty of good things flying around about it.. and it does seem to have a few big turnarounds

I don't know if it fits, but Gurren Lagaan caught me off guard a lot.

Ergo Proxy definitely didn't progress the way I thought it would, features some great action but is more focused around the plot (definitely causes you to think at points), great series that is definitely worth a watch.

Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan: Well there's no surprising twists in this, but if you've seen anything with similiar plot to this anime, please feel free to flame me. I'm pretty confident you won't
Happy Lesson: I was rather shocked for this one. There's 3 seasons to this, 4 if you count the OVA. The ending just ended up ruining it for me, he ended up with the wrong person in my opinion....
Speed Grapher: Quite shocked at what the anti-protagonist did at the end. Alot of surprising plot twists and entertaining throughout. It has a nice heartfelt ending as well.
Welcome to the N.H.K: Definately one of the most truly unique animes out there. A Hikikomori and mentally crazy protagonist + an Otaku neighbor + a psychologically traumatized girl + Porn games + A suicidal druggy girl + Marketing scam + Game freak hikikomori who refuses to step outside his door= Uniqueness! I found the manga to be far more outrageous, but the anime is great too.
