Judging from the canon timeline of MoHS, the D&D edition still being sold at the time would be 4E (if not newer). And it is a lot easier for newbies to pick up and learn, especially if they have video gaming experience prior (which, since Canon Kyon references the very popular Dragon Quest games, is applicable here).

However, I'm still much more familiar with 3.5E.

To be honest, I picked D&D mostly because it was the topic of discussion in this thread at the time, and also partly because the only other game system I'm familiar with which has an easier learning curve is BESM, which would be far too twee to use.
Haruhi takes place in '200X', and I'd suggest 3.5E because it simply has a lot more content than 4E does right now. Easier to write with.

Plus, Itsuko mentions something about an epic plot, and, from what I've seen of 4.0, it appears to be much less story-oriented than 3.5 is.

On a slightly-related tangent to the off-topicness, wouldn't Koizumi be more of the Binder-class? Since his powers are gifted to him by Suzumiya and he can only use them when she gives him "permission" to use them (subconsciously that is.) The process is somewhat similar to how Binders draw power from Vestiges. (Another side-sidenote: My Avatar is an edit of the Vestige Amon's seal. Binders FTW!)

Sarah Jane Smith sounds too unwieldy; it doesn't quite read smoothly. I think the simpler the name we pick, the better.

Incidentally, I realize that I'm probably at fault for most of the D&D off-topicness, so I should probably advertise the Social Group I started a while back. PnP gaming discussions can be diverted there.

Sarah Jane Smith also makes me think of the Terminator, so... yeahhhhh...

Although I guess that's ANOTHER time-travel reference... or not. I don't know at this point.

I missed a lot, as I'm at camp right now... thread's been moving quickly as usual, I see.

Though I don't understand how we got onto the topic of DnD?

The name Sarah Jane Smith is unwieldy in my opinion, at least for our purposes. Keep it simple, first and last name, short and sweet. The final name we decide on will just be another alias for someone who happens to be using an alias, albeit unwillingly.

Again, we don't know the original intention of "John Smith", so, as this is a fan project anyway, why not put our own references into the name?

I agree. We could errata it later if something comes up.

I've already thrown my support to Jane Smith simply because Sarah Jane Smith is unnecessarily long and I want this to reach a conclusion as soon as possible.

Plus Dr. Who is dumb.

By the way, does this new group affiliate with MMOs?

Only if they're tabletop ones, I would assume.

Tabletop MMOs? Didn't know that could happen.

And I fully understand, DaCyclops. I visited TV Tropes the other day, and, before I know it, I'm on a completely different topic (think Austin Powers) from a typical top-down shooter (okay, not typical *cough*Touhou*cough*, but whatever). I check the clock and it's been 4 hours. 0.o How does this happen?

Oh, and I got to Touhou from Haruhi Suzumiya, which in turn I got to from X-men, which in turn I got to from Lucky Star... you get the picture.
