Only have 3 things to say about this episode.

First, Yumi's mom is so totally cool!
Second, I love Touko-chan. She is so adorable and cute. I feel sorry for what she is going through.
Third, What a terrific episode. While it wasn't as good as episode 4 where Yoshino finds her Imouto, it was right up there with it for me. Not sure it deserves a 10, but its close enough I'm giving it one anyway.

Spoiler for episode 6:

I took the time to watch some of Doremi's subs vs. Chihiro's subs. IMHO I think Chihiro's doing the better job with using more eloquent language and it sounds a lot closer to the true dialogue, although the setback is that their release is a day longer.

For me, it doesn't matter which subbers are doing the best translation. As long as I can understand what was said.

This episode marks the start of the first Marimite novel I read, so I was of course looking very much forward to seeing it.
I'm sure a number of people here have experienced this same thing before, but there is certainly a strange awareness that comes from watching an episode where you already know and can anticipate what is going to happen and what will be said. It was interesting to see how scenes ended up being animated, as well as what was changed, added, moved, etc, and I loved every bit of it.
But enough of my jibber jabber. Definitely a 10 from me. A very enjoyable episode.

Also, hurray for the successful return of the animation staff! ( ・ω・)ゞ

Despite all the innuendos and the best efforts of the eyecatches drawers this is not a yuri series.

Doesn't Yumi's mom know that Kashiwagi is Sachiko's fiancee? And, uh, that Yuuki is a more likely target for his affections than Yumi? (Though not knowing that last one, which is a sort of secret, is forgivable.)

Also, Touko was saved by the bell. Yumi was totally going to abuse her...

Seeing Rei and Sachiko together was nice.

First off, no matter what anime you're talking about, don't give someone preoccupied anything to slice. Once the brain goes to other matters, the slice mechanism goes into autopilot and the results are pretty self-explanatory. Still better than slicing veggies to cook, then blood often comes into the picture.
I'm not sure whether I'd say this is or is not a "yuri" show. It seems like the relationships are often a half-romantic, partial attraction that is definitely not a mere friendship, but that all parties know isn't likely to lead to a full romantic relationship. I remember seeing in some old show once a woman talking about her days in a girls' school and how those sorts of things, which in that case were reportedly dubbed "passions", were common and pretty much innocent. So it is somewhat yuri, in that the girl-girl relationships clearly go beyond mere friends, to the point where a girl will get flustered over a "date", get jealous of a potential "rival", or even go into a panic when asked if she's interested in developing such a relationship with someone. I think this is what American fans sometimes refer to as "shoujo-ai".
Does anyone have any idea what Touko's big "secret"is? I'm guessing not an illness since that wouldn't likely cause disagreement with the family, but otherwise I'm drawing a blank.

I share the thoughts of all the previous comments before this.

I didn't expect a wonderful build up from this episode for the things that will happen on the next ones.

10/10. Best part was the awkward scene between Yumi and Touko. I flinched almost while watching that scene.

Also, I like how this episode interpreted the way girls instinctively "know" when someone is thinking about them.

Can't wait for next week!

This was another episode with superb characterization and excellent writing. The problem is that, for Marimite, this almost goes without saying!

What I found especially refreshing was the sheer amount and effectiveness of the non-verbal communication in this episode. Anime is a visual medium, and the creators took full advantage of this to make for a scrumptious feast. The two pieces of imagery that I found most interesting were Rei being so absorbed in her thoughts that she shredded her cake and how Kanako overrode Touko's objections over the invitation by grabbing her hand. The latter is particularly nice because it setup the plot precisely the way the creators planned it, acknowledged the participants' reluctance and inner struggles, and do so in a very natural manner.

It's basically a show about courtship rituals, wherein just about all of the participants are female. I don't think that it's really a yuri show in the sense that it's primarily about strong relationships; regardless of whether they have any romantic implications are not. In fact, most of the more important relationships don't have any romance attached to them. Comparing and contrasting with similar shows will probably reveal how much or little Marimite is dependent upon the yuri label.

Just a note here. If you already know the answer from the novels and whatnot, please resist the impulse to post any hints here.

Re: Touko's secret: I was going to say "she's a lesbian, and her parents don't approve", but then, why would they send her to a Catholic School for girls?

Re: Yumi's powers: Well, she can already teleport. Why not telepathy, too?
